When I'm asked, as a greeting, if I'm alright my usual response is 'I've always thought so' :-D :-D

'Simply English' by Simon Heffer - an essential read for anyone who cares about the language & wants to use it correctly.

Graham Report 16 May 2014 13:52

That reminds me; the other day somebody asked me if I was alright. I said "no; only down one side". :-D

Graham

Graham Report 16 May 2014 13:51

What about when people passing you in the street say "alright?" and don't bother to wait for an answer?

when someone walks up and says........... "I don't mean to interrupt......."

and does exactly that!

This happened tonight........ and I said LOUDLY....... we're used to you doing that....... and it went right over his head. Rude man.

Within 30 seconds everyone but one (the person he collared) had left the area.

:-P

Island

Island Report 15 May 2014 19:07

Well h'ackchooly, me fred was about people who conclude a perfectly reasonable comment with 'rant over' when they haven't had a rant LOL
It comes across as 'this is what I think but as I'm really timid please don't draw attention to my post'

If you wanna have a rant, have a rant :-D no need to apologise.

But hey, if anybody wants a moan, have a moan. :-D :-D

'Emma'

maggiewinchester Report 15 May 2014 18:26

Anyone, when asked a question replying 'So'.
For example
'What's the weather going to be like?'
'So, it will rain in the Midlands'

NOOOOOOOOOO

'So' implies you're going into further depth about something you've previously said - But you haven't said anything!! :-| :-| :-|

In this case, the 'thought word' (ie what am I going to say next?) is WELL
