Football's Not Life and Death

it's much more important than that (Bill Shankley, late Manager of Liverpool)

"Premier League clubs' revenues broke the £3bn mark in the recent 2013-14 season, say analysts at Deloitte.

They say the figure has been hit just four years after passing £2bn, and that revenues have doubled in seven years."

Note there are just 20 clubs in Premiership. Some are virtually unknown, but the more famous ones this season were:
Crystal Palace, Swansea, West Ham, Sunderland, Aston Villa, Hull, West Brom, Norwich, Fulham and Cardiff.

Football - income £3bn (Premier league teams alone)
Total ad spend in UK - £17.9bn
Church of England income - £1bn

Football used to be a boot about when I was a boy. I met the Captain of England a couple of times (Billy Wright) and he was earning twice my dad's salary at the time. Most famous footballers were on slightly above average wage, but Billy (thanks to England games) was earning a princely fortune of £1,000 a year (£20 a week) 60 years ago.

I thought Arsenal, MU and Liverpool were quite well known.

Billy Wright did have quite a well known WAG though.

Naaah. Never heard of Arsenal, Man U and Liverpool. My eyes never stray beyond the Liberty and the great Surinam star Dwight Tiendalli. Robben looked good last night in International I watched. And von Persie. Do they play in England? :-D :-D ;-)

Edit. Kense. Joy Beverley and both her sisters are still alive. 104, and twins 100, I think. Nearly as old as Dame Vera.

Don't think they're that age yet John :-S

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 5 Jun 2014 11:34

Just checked, Mau. Only 103 and 99. Sorry ;-)

Being serious (hate being that):

The trio comprises eldest sister Joy (born Joycelyn V. Chinery, 5 May 1924), and the twins, Teddie (born Hazel P. Chinery, 5 May 1927) and Babs (born Babette P. Chinery, 5 May 1927). So 90, and 87. Joy shares same birthday as twins. I never knew that.

And Vera Lynn is now 97 and still working. I think Bevs have retired now, but twins certainly still look better than most 20 years younger.

Sorry to stray off topic a bit, though Vera Lynn has signed for Arsenal Ladies next season.

Absolutely loathe football and all the broohaha surrounding it.

TV and papers seem to lose their sense of what the MASS of the populace want.

And remember the most popular 'sport' in the UK is Angling...........

:-D :-D

Dazed/Confused. The worldwide commercial fish industry is worth £63 billion pounds. No idea of UK share of that, but would guess at £1bn tops. Quite a lot of work in Grimsby, Hull and Fleetwood and many other places to land our catches - as well as pneumonia stood waist deep in a mountain stream in Snowdonia with your box of flies open.

And 20 teams of 11 gifted individuals like Dwight Tiendalli of Swansea (I am his agent, btw) can gross £3bn between them. And there are 3 other divisions. Plus Skrill, Scotland, Welsh League etc etc.....

From my FB page yesterday: A warning to my friends.....

Please note: I have no interest in football, couldn't care less who is fit, unfit or mentally deranged. Don't give a damn about their strip, boots or hair styles. Wouldn't give a 'pundit' air time even at 4 a.m. on a wet Monday. Will never buy any product which uses this *cough* sport to promote their crisps, drinks or TVs. I will NEVER watch an overpaid bunch of nancy boys prancing or falling around a pitch on which only a proper ball game should be played. Thank gawd RUGBY is on this weekend

I get that people like football. (Even though I find it tedious)

I get that people will want to watch England play in the World cup.

I don't get why the other matches will be on prime time TV and on the main channels. I want to watch the normal programmes not strange countries kicking a ball around for far too long.

I don't get why we have to have all the "experts" droning on before and after the matches. Just put the game on, if you must. That's long enough at 90 minutes. We don't need the barely articulate rambling on before and afterwards.

When England get knocked out I expect there will still be wall to wall football on TV - why? Just put it on BBC4 or Sky sports.

*mutters darkly*

Kense

Kense Report 5 Jun 2014 21:24

BBC4 is the one channel that I would expect to be free from football.

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 5 Jun 2014 23:36

S4C will also probably be free from football. Wales aren't in it, so S4C can concentrate on rugby and lots of nice programmes.

And Challenge will be football free. Can watch old Bullseyes on that and chuckle at fashions in those days. Don't chuckle too much, cos I still dress like that.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 6 Jun 2014 17:03

* nods head and agrees with Gwynne* Really annoying that everything that I get pleasure from (on TV) will be either moved or cancelled because of all the matches that are on. And, if we have to have the world cup matches, why are we having to also watch the warm up matches? Sunday is great. Canadian Grand Prix on one and Sport aid on ITV Countryfile, that I like watching is on at 5 O'clock. Huh? I shall have to record it!!
