I was talking to OH the other day (I must have wanted something!) and I was saying how I never much liked Winter Mixture sweets when I was a child and wondering if I would now I am masquerading as a grown-up.

He had never had them and didn't know what I was talking abut.

We went to the Range today and, to my delight, I saw a bag of Winter Mixture so I bought it to share with him, the better to educate him.

They bore no resemblance at all to Winter Mixture. In fact, they didn't taste like anything I have ever eaten. They were horrible!

What a disappointment.
Gosh I haven't had Winter Mixture for years. There's an old fashioned style sweet shop in town, - sells sweets by weighing an amount into small scales.
I'll see if they have any there and try some.

As I recall, there was a general smell of cloves / mints / humbugs...... and lots of striped sweets.

Thank you Gwyn.

We are thinking of coming over to Brogdale sometime.

The woman who was so helpful with the funeral, made the coffin topper, baked some of the cake and scones and generally kept you all in order, she doesn't think she did anything out of the ordinary.

She says she doesn't want anything for doing it blah blah but I know she is addicted to cheese and that little shop does some really interesting ones so I thought we might have a day to there sometime soon/

You coming?

That would be a pleasant day out, as long as OH is not visiting Hampshire that day.
Not sure I'd get there in time on a bus.

When does he go to Hants?.

We might meet there.

He / we go at least once a month.... Depending on our commitments and his Mum's social diary.

I don't post much on General Chat board but being bored I was reading the threads on here and noticed this.

There is a website called "A Quarter Of" which sells old fashioned sweets and they do Winter Mixture:-

My mum used to eat 'Winter Mixture'.
Gwyn's right about the smell.
They definitely need to be bought from a huge sweet jar.

I did look on that site but they didn't look right either.

Can't deal with any more of that kind of disappointment.

There are quite a few 'Old fashioned' (the number varies) sweet shops in Winchester. Would I be deemed an odd old bird and carted off, if I asked to smell their Winter Mixture? :-S

There is only one way to find out.

Oh Sharron, now you are leading others astray lol

Hope you find what you are looking for and also manage to treat that lady who helped so much for the funeral.

As someone has mentioned 'A Quarter of' is an online sweetie shop. Great service as well.

I get my winter mixture from there. They are fab.

But beware if you go there, you will buy loads of other old fashioned sweets.

I visit the site about every other month and ration myself to a set amount. Otherwise I would just go mad.... :-D

Sharron Report 24 Jun 2014 09:52

So they are authentic on there then? Clove balls that make your mouth a bit numb, proper funny flavours?

You have to realize that I have been through the extreme trauma of buying Winter Mixture that did not come up to standard in any way.

Once bitten, twice shy and all that.

Could I, perhaps, come round and have a little go with your Winter Mixture.

I was going to ask if I could have a little suck of your clove balls but why play into the hands of the RR merchant?

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 24 Jun 2014 10:24

"A quarter of" definitely have clove flavour in the mixture. Reading the reviews on there I think you probably should try the handmade winter mixture rather than the ordinary winter mixture. It seems the handmade variety have more flavours.

Sharron,

:-D :-D :-D :-D

Maybe some kind soul would send you one through the post to test for authenticity before embarking on an epic journey in the search for the 'Disappearing Clove Balls.'
I would but unfortunately dont like them or should i say didnt as a child.

Fingers crossed for you.

I have had a look at the site again, at the handmade ones.

They look very tempting BUT, if I should buy them and not like them either, I would be £16 light and be the proud possessor of three pounds of sweets I don't like, going sticky in a kilner jar.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 24 Jun 2014 11:56

You can buy 250 grams of them for £2. 47p but I don't know what the delivery charge is on small orders.

I bought some cherry lips - only from a little shop near us I might add. They tasted nothing like the ones I used to love as a child.
