I am still waiting for mine which was supposed to be a Christmas pressie!! I did throw out some very large hints recently since my birthday is nearly here and o.h. has decided we will go shopping the week before my bday when he is on early shift so we have time to spend, but he will ask his friend at work first who is a whizz at getting just the right gadgets at the right price. I have been practising on o.h.'s ipad which is his work one but he can bring it home and use it privately too so I am getting an idea of what to do.

Will let o.h. read the comments above. We did get some useful info from Which earlier this year so will hopefully get the right thing with all this advice and info to hand

Glad your o.h. is getting on with his AnnMarie

Hi all, Firstly thank you all for your input. :-D .

Hubby and I spoke to son & D-I-L and then went to pc world on Monday. After speaking with a very nice young lady who went into everything very slowly and carefully for us 'oldies' hubby decided on a Samsung Galaxy 4.

He seems to be getting on with it very well with the help of our 13yr old grandson and our son who has helped him to download some bits too. I keep hearing all these strange sounds coming from it and repeatedly keep asking him (from the kitchen) 'what did you say' and he replies, I was talking to my tablet lol.

(I am not always in the kitchen by the way lol)

As he has been quite poorly these last few months its taking his mind off his aches and pains which is a big bonus, also he hates being on his own and I have to do jury service in a weeks time so he will have something to occupy himself.

Needless to say if I want any jobs done in the near future I will have to hide it. ;-)

Best wishes to all. xx :-) :-)

As Errol says the iPad is way over priced as are all Apple products.
It is also impossible to upgrade ( unless Apple choose to push a change ) while the various connectors are not standard and change over time. iPad will not render Flash ( which is becoming less of an issue ).
The iPad is very difficult to link up to other kit unless it too is Apple or running apple applications.
Security is poor.

The ipad is no easier to use than current (Jelly Bean ) versions of Android.

I use a S4 Samsung note phone - which will fit in my pocket and yeah, make phone calls. When I want the big picture from it I just throw the picture at the Sony Bravia HDTV or a PC. Who needs a tablet > Jumbo the elephant I guess.

Many tablet vendors will say that the miserly memory on tablets does not matter 'cos you can keep data "on the cloud". One day maybe but current upload speeds are 3Gb/sec at best and usually much worse.

If you really feel the need for a lightweight computer device with a screen of around 10in then the Chromebook is far better value. But when was Apple ever about value ? Looking cool does not always mean works better.

If Apple was so ez to use why are their commercial sales ( outside of graphic designers ) next to zero ?

Does the slave labour rates paid to the workers of Apple's Chinese suppliers bother people at all ?

Kitty are you sure that the camera on your mobile isn't reversible so that you can take photos of views etc.

What make and model is it?

I can't get on with ipads/tablets. I don't really like touch-screen and prefer a laptop with a decent keyboard (been using computers for 30+ years so maybe I'm a bit of a Luddite). OH uses a tablet and it's OK for taking away if we want to access internet.

Kitty!! You have found the perfect 'selfie' camera :-D Reckon it's all some people want ;-)

I have to press a button to take a selfie and camera turns itself somehow lol - if I forget to turn it back it can be a scary moment when you go to take a photo and see your own ugly mug staring at you. :-0

I've only just acquired a Nexus 7 2013- it has been listed in Computeractive magazine for some months in their "Buy It" list, describing it as the best budget buy tablet. Still exploring it! but it seems fine though I am going to have to buy a stylus! I have also bought "Nexus 7 for Dummies"!

I think its always worth going on a comparison site rather than take someone elses recommendation.

You normally get what you pay for although Nexus 7 has a good rating on this site

I can't afford an ipad, but have a tablet to take out and about when researching. I can access the internet via my contract mobile phone when away from home.

It's rubbish at pictures as the camera is not forward facing and I don't want pictures of me standing in front of things...............silly me didn't realise until I got it home :-(

Apart from that I am very happy with it.

I have a laptop and a Samsung Galaxy Tab.
Love my Galaxy Tab.

There is one major problem with iPads. You can only use Apple Apps. etc., otherwise they are considered the top of the range.

You may be best going to somewhere like PC World and trying out the different tabs, for size, ease of use and weight, some although small can be quite heavy.

If you know anyone with a tab ask to try theirs out.

I have a Nexus 7 2 which has a retina screen and I love it.

Much easier to use than my smart phone and is easy to carry when out and about.

Smaller than an Ipad more like Ipad mini size.

jax Report 3 Jul 2014 14:35

I don't have either, but if I was thinking of getting one I would probably look into Sony as I think their phones are good and really they are just a larger version of the phone
