No wonder the poor old local produce merchants have a hard living,,,,,,,,grow your own is what I say.........or go to a farm shop....as little or as much as you want to buy,,,,,,, |

they are very nice Huia, but my gripe is, why source them from so far away - not as if they are exotic - they're onions, and cooking onions at that |

Ann, I can assure you that the onions from Balle Brothers are among the best in the world. Pukekohe where they were grown is the vege capital of New Zealand, although Ohakune would try to claim the title. Ohakune has a giant carrot 'growing' by the road. Pukekohe had spoken of putting up a giant onion, a few years ago. I haven't heard any more about that lately, thank goodness. My home town is famous for its Pukekohe longkeeper onions, also potatos, and lots of other veges. |

Oh and when I was at the checkout in Tesco in winter time the till operator obviously had a nasty cold. Between customers he took out a tatty tissue from his pocket and blew his nose and then put it back and was about to touch my shopping. I asked if he would use antibac gel on his hands first and he didn't have any, so I asked for a manager to get him some, made a real fuss I did but they got some antibac wipes for him. They said they used to have antibac gel but had been stopped from keeping it at their tills. |

I occasionally buy ready meals if I am in a rush or eating alone but was horrified to see on the back of a Tescos chicken one that the chicken came from various countries including Asian countries. I just felt really put off, how do we know the chickens are fed properly etc and when they are killed are they kept in hygienic conditions? Checking in other stores I have found the same thing, even Lidl's chicken slices for sandwiches are from Asia. The quick make packs of Chinese takeaway from Asda also have chicken sourced from the same countries. |

Lidl veg appears to be British very often. |

A while back I picked up a packet of "Scottish King Prawns" in the supermarket. On closer examination it stated in small print, "Produced in Scotland - packed in Thailand" |

From the point of view of my own garden veggie patch. Isn't it a bit early for UK onions? |

Ah! For the days you could browse all the jumpers shirts etc. folded on a counter and if your size wasn't there you could ask if they would check the stock room. |
