I have the marriage certificate for my 4 x great grandad from 1826. as it doesn't give the names of his parents, how do I find out exactly what year he was born? I'm guessing that as he married in Paisley, this is where he would have been born. I've found 3 people of the same name born between 1799 and 1803, but I don't know what one is him |

What you will have is not a marriage cert (Civil Registration in Scotland did not start until 1855) it will be a parish record. If he died in Scotland after 1855, his death entry will give his parents' names. |

My 4 x great grandad's name was John Swan, who married Marion Robertson on the 9th March 1826 in Paisley ( parish is listed as Paisley High on the certificate ). His son was Robert Swaney who was born around 1836 in I'm guessing Paisley( he married in 1858 in Glasgow, his age was listed as being 22 at time of marriage ) - by the time my great grandad was born in 1891 the spelling of he surname had changed to Sweeney. |

Usually early C19 marriages with this problem can be worked out from a later census. This is the best one I can find to fit yr data. Scottish spellings tend to be somewhat erratic. There are a lot of church ( Presbyterian, R.C., ) which the FH companies have not got hold of yet. As well as BMD records rent books have many a tale to tell but you need to know who the landlord was. |

Who did Robert marry and what was his occupation and address at the time? What was John's occupation from the marriage cert? |
|||

Sarah | Report | 10 Aug 2014 16:02 |
Robert married a Helen Hamilton on 9th July 1858 in Glasgow, his dad John's occupation was a baker and Robert's occupation a journeyman tailor ( address was 130 Holm Street Glasgow). Witnesses for Robert's marriage were Robert Meikle and Mary McNab, but there are no witness names listed for John's marriage. Spelling for the surname's had changed from Swan to Swaney by 1858. Thanks to everyone for info |

Ah......I'm not sure how Scottish records work, but original parish records in England for that date do list witnesses. |
