OneFootInTheGrave Report 23 Aug 2014 13:33

Theresa May the Home Secretary has said, in a article in the Daily Telegraph, that new powers to tackle extremist groups are being brought forward by the government - sorry but haven't we been told this before.

In February 2011 the Prime Minister David Cameron made a keynote speech on radicalisation and extremism and how it should be dealt with. In 2013, after the murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby, the Prime Minister set up a group of experts tasked on advising the government on how to tackle extremism - to date many of the recommendations they made have yet to be implemented :-(

Personally, I am having some difficulty trying to understand why, the Home Secretary has written this article, we have heard it all before. Does the UK not already have various laws that could be used to deal with the banning of extremist groups, radicalisation, and restricting individuals travelling abroad - for example it has been known for football hooligan to be rounded up and their passports taken away to stop them travelling abroad to a football match.

It may be the case that some new laws are required, that said, should we not also be making sure that the existing laws are enforced - the only reason I can think as to why the current laws are not being enforced is that - there is a fear this will alienate certain communities or cultures, is that a reason not to enforce the law :-S

Please note, this is not a thread about the current situation in the Middle East, it is about enforcing our current laws - thanks.

If the law was adhered to and enforced by the Police etc., there would be no need for any new laws or enforcements.

Just do not understand......

OneFootInTheGrave Report 23 Aug 2014 14:19

DazedConfused - that was my thoughts, many Acts of Parliament allow for them to be amended by the use of Statutory Instruments, this means that usually there is no requirement for Parliament to pass a new Act - so why are new laws needed, can current laws not be amended, or were they not thought through correctly in the first place :-S

Current laws are sometimes misunderstood & therefore misapplied.

I'd prefer to hear from any Minister of what he/she had done.

I'm fed up listening to pointless political promises as to what a Minister is going to do.

But, of course, laws are only intended for others - not me. I think they are superfluous to my own existence.

RolloTheRed Report 23 Aug 2014 15:07

The tricky thing for ministers is that once you have a law it may be tested in the courts. The present coalition has already come a cropper in the courts more than once.

How for instance would a court, following a law forbidding incitement to hate and murder, deal with this?

"Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful."
Quran 9:5

Any number of fiction and political works would be affected by such laws. Indeed they are already with the thorny issue of screening classic movies and book reprints. Any such attempt at censorship will be seen off in the UK as has already happened with the failed attempt to license the press.
.
Which is why you hear a lot of steam but see little action. It is simply not possible to pass laws to make people be nice to each other still less censor their views however reprehensible.

Personally I think politicians are very keen to do the talking but are very reluctant to do any walking :-|

Politics is the art of the possible.
Only it seems do maniacs attempt the impossible with the results seen in ISIL and other places.
Our politicians for all their faults are not maniacs.

Some historians have a hankering for the clan & tribe set-up of the ancient days.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 23 Aug 2014 20:31

England never had clans and tribes not even during its early days in the C5. Hankering after a past that never existed is very much a Celtic trait. Faux nostalgie is the basis of the Scottish referendum and quite devoid of logic.

It can make good entertainment though from Sutcliffe and Tolkien through to Willow and Game of Thrones.

take away British citizenship from these immigrants who choose to join these terrorist groups

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 23 Aug 2014 22:43

I doubt that they can Ann, as many/most have British Citizenship by Birthright :-0

Edit - I refer of course to those born here. Immigrants wouldn't necessarily have British Citizenship. In that case they should be deported back to their country of origin, should they re-enter the UK.

RolloTheRed - no mention of 'England' in my earlier posting.

Life & times existed elsewhere too, if history books are to be believed.

It has been reported wildly, that the guardian of our border controls, immigration controls, and policing, has ambitions to follow in the footsteps of a previous "female" leader of the Conservative Party - with the rumours that Boris may enter the arena the lady's ambitions have been dented, so to deal with that dent I have no doubt that we will read many more utterance (spin) from on high by TM in the coming months.

Alas Theresa May's choice of shoes would not be Mrs T's choice ;-)

The Prime Minister and current members of the Cabinet, including Theresa May may need to be on their guard from now on as the Mayor of London's spokesman has just confirmed that Boris Johnson has submitted his application to stand as the Tory candidate for Uxbridge and South Ruislip at 2015 General Election :-D

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 26 Aug 2014 14:22

Most grown up people can see right through Boris who is a clever opportunist playing populist politics.

OneFootInTheGrave

OneFootInTheGrave Report 26 Aug 2014 14:32

When I look at what Boris Johnson is doing in many areas of London - I am reminded of The Highland Clearances ;-)
