We're on the Oz Do Not Call list... and we can report anyone who calls us. When we get a call from an unknown I now ask them if they know they're breaking the law, and they hang up.

We still get calls from charities.

Got one the other day, the woman said she was from some Aussie charity (can't remember the name) who supported children whose parents weren't well off, then she said I could give money to support a child in ETHIOPIA!! I said Ethiopia wasn't part of Australia, and she got all flustered. Stupid woman. No, I didn't donate.

Many people who signed up for the Canadian version of the "no calls list" ended up getting MORE calls :-(

The Canadian Do Not Call list continues to receive heavy criticism, with people referring to it as "totally useless", due to the costly but totally ineffective enforcement, the large number of exempt groups and the ability for anyone from anywhere in the world to purchase sets of phone numbers for relatively low fees, and then abuse the Do Not Call List as a calling list.

There have been multiple examples of people placing themselves on the list, and then receiving a sudden increase in telemarketing calls three months later.

The Do Not Call List exempts ....................

....... Canadian registered charities,

....... political parties,

....... riding associations,

....... political candidates,

....... pollsters

....... newspapers of general circulation for the purpose of soliciting subscriptions.

....... organizations with whom residents have an existing business relationship are also exempt.

....... Telemarketers may also still call if a resident gave them permission in a written form or verbally.

The law also does not extend its protections to non-Canadian phone numbers.

We have an ansaphone on all the time so rarely take these calls, but sometimes if I am expecting a call I pick up the receiver half way through the message and get offered new boilers etc etc I then tell them we have no central heating, they sound astonished but it's true. Other times I let them waffle and then say Oh I am only staying here I can't help you, byeee.

I will try that 14258 number thanks

Lizx

p.s. I just googled What happens if I dial 14258 after a scam call and there are several comments about this, one seems to intimate it's only through sky and others say you have to add ** after the number.

Having read this post previously I was READY.

No.1 - Gentleman very interested in being told I had 14 windows plus two porches all mainly glass. He sounded excited as he asked for my address and I enquired as to whether he would care for my landlord's telephone number first. 'You have a landlord' he screeched down the phone and when I affirmed - he slammed the phone down.

No.2 This afternoon Asian lady with very thick accent, hard to understand but gist was in two days time I would receive a mail from Microsoft to download apps. Very easy to do and they would help me to download to my computer. At this stage I queried 'computer?' Yes - have not got one - you do not have a computer? No............long pause--------'do you have a laptop?' - No. She at least apologised. :-D

my friend's 92 year old Dad loves scam calls - they make his day

last one he had told him he had a problem with his computer - "Have I really, I had no idea" We can fix it for you said the caller - what will it cost - very cheap - how do I pay? - a debit or credit card will do - hang on while I get one - I'm upstairs at the moment - after about fifteen minutes with the caller saying "Hello - hello" he picked the phone up - sorry about the wait but when I got downstairs I realised I do not have a computer!!!

the previous one was allegedly from his electricity company promising to cut his bills by 50% - how do I do this he asked - just a small charge the man said - so you'll be needing my credit card details? well not just yet - well do you have a piece of paper? Yes I do - well can I suggest you use it to wipe your **** and clean off all that b******t you just spouted

in my new Good Housekeeping magazine received today it says if you dial 14258 immediately after putting down the phone on a scam call, the next time they call you they will get the engaged tone - will be giving it a go

Those 'technicians' who say they are calling from Microsoft must be desperate to meet targets or something.

I have had 4 calls TODAY.

Very pleasant-sounding woman phoned this morning and told me we had problems, but after a few words I ended the call. I couldn't believe it when she phoned straight back and asked why I had put the phone down.
She was concerned that unless she helped fix things, there would be alot of problems later.

I told her there would be even more if I let her fix things and hung up.

I had an Asian sounding man came on the phone trying to sell me PVC goods.
Pvc gutters and fascias he said, got them says me. How about doors and windows, have them as well I said. What about a PVC conservatory, yes I would love one of them says I.
I now detect a change in his voice. Can we call and do a survey and when will it be convenient
Anytime you wish says I, but tell the man to bring a pair of steps, as I live in a 1st floor flat.
He rather rudely , hung up on me.!!!!

I had yet another 'international' call today. I let him speak.
It was a 'home/lifestyle' survey.
Second question - 'Do you own your own home?'
My reply 'No'.
Him 'Aah'
Me 'Does this mean you won't bother me anymore? - Good'.

Apparently, if you live in rented accommodation, you don't have a lifestyle!!
Oh, and more to the point, you won't be buying double glazing either!

I told OH about some of the responses on here .....................

he laughed, then said "I don't get any calls like that"

Right ...........

.......... the computer he uses when he goes into his office at the university is registered to the university, not him, and they have super super security, etc.

His computer at home is linked to mine, and mine is the one that has all the registered software ..................... plus I'm the one who usually answers the phone

............... that's a hangover from the days when he was still teaching, and we could get students phoning at all times of the evening and night (and weekends) ...... especially just before or just after exams.

He's been officially retired for 10 years, but "volunteers" out there ............. he actually has 2 offices and 2 computers to use for his "volunteer" work :-)
