I'd better get my tongue out of my cheek.

I DO have a Scottish passport........ I bought it in a touristy gift shop in Glasgow.

Uk gov has said that Scots passport would only be ok for British Isles Cta so long as Scots immigration rules close to England. Eire, C.I., IOM no problem. However Scottish membership of the EU will require joining Schengen hence Millibands recent remarks about the border. The new people smuggling route into the Uk rump may be via Leith lol. If the utterly irrational yes vote wins life in Scotland will become very nasty very quickly as capital, business and skills fly south. It would only be a question of when not if Scotland goes bust - inside 5 years. The Darien bailout won't be offered again so a "yes" vote will put Scotland firmly under the thumb of Merkel assuming Salmond does intend to join the Eu. Otherwise it can take its chances on uts tod with dwindling oil fish farms and an aging unhealthy and poorly skilled workforce. It us hard to see the Tories in London crying anything but crocodile tears. My GGF was born in Galloway but had the great good sense to join the British army which eventually sent him to England.

I doubt if I'll use my British passport again.

I have dual citizenship & two passports, Australian & British.

To be honest, I only got the British one to make living in Europe easier; if you've ever dealt with German paperwork, you'll know what I mean!

:-)

What about people in Scotland? If it's a yes vote, will they eventually be issued with Scottish passports?

The mind boggles, just thinking about the paperwork. :-0

LadyScozz - as far as I am aware Scotland voting for independence will not affect the status of your UK passport :-)

Mayfield - thanks for clarify your comment :-)

If the vote does 'go to the wire' it looks as though the decision will be down to foreign residents who can vote. Seems tough on Scots living south of the border.

It also worries me when I hear people saying 'they'll give it a go'. I thought there was to be no going back. I get the impression that some see it like an ordinary election and that they can change things a couple of years down the track.

They( the Scots) are also fed up with Conservative governments telling them what to do - well - I thought we had a UK wide vote that could change the government every 4 years - or have I been missing something.

Mayfield Report 7 Sep 2014 11:18

OneFootinTheGrave, :-D

Granted that all Scots are not raging claymore brandishing fanatics, I was simply making the point that the scots are welcome to sing the praises of their nation, but I would feel embarrassed to hang a St Georges flag outside my home as it would be considered that I was a supporter of racist principles. ;-)

If Scotland votes for independence, the current proposal is that the Scottish government will immediately begin negotiations so that Scotland becomes independent on 24 March 2016.

Until that date, or any other date agreed, MP's representing Scottish constituencies will still sit at Westminster and the UK government will still pass laws affecting Scotland.

After that date there will be no MP's representing Scottish constituencies sitting at Westminster and the UK government will no longer be able to pass laws affecting Scotland because Scotland will no longer be part of the United Kingdom.

I personally support he No Campaign, I was born in Scotland and lived there for near on 56 years, that said I am in the opposite camp to that of the majority of my large family and many friends who live in Scotland.

Mayfield - I don't recognise you description of Scots waving a Scottish flag about, wearing a kilt, screaming abuse at the English, and because you are an English person immediately branding you a Nazi or racist - bit over the top :-(

BillinOz - thanks for that link, very interesting.

If it's a YES win, what do I do with my British passport?

hmmmmm :-S

I wouldn't go as far as saying Scottish born MPs, but certainly MPs who currently represent Scottish constituancies, or who have their permanent home in Scotland.

Mayfield

Mayfield Report 7 Sep 2014 10:37

I don't have any really strong feeling either way, but it seems to me there will be so many unforeseen problems apart from the major ones that it will be a nightmare for everyone.

As an English person I feel that the Scottish have much more "national" image than we do. It's fine to wave a Scottish flag about wear a kilt and scream abuse at the English, but as an English person you are immediately branded a Nazi or racist!

I can see all kinds of problems with borders for example if the UK is still in the EU and Scotland is ejected and has to work through the EU bureaucrats to try and get back in. It will be like a messy divorce and we know just how nasty and petty people can get in those circumstances!

A fine idea in theory but just unworkable without massive cost and distress.

Fine let them go their own way but I do hope Scottish born MPs will be ejected from Westminster ;-)

I have a lot of family and a lot of friends in Scotland and from the views they have expressed on the issue, one thing has come over very loud clear, and that is that every time David Cameron or George Osborne enter the debate they put peoples backs up. Perhaps they would help the No Campaign more, if they stayed clear of making promises as many Scots do not believe anything either of them say.

It might help the undecided decide to vote No.

With a recent poll showing the Yes Campaign is marginally ahead - some pollsters are forecasting that the outcome of the Scottish Independence Referendum, will go to the wire.

With just 11 days of campaigning left, the UK government is attempting to sway the result with, the Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, today promising - that in the next few days there would be a plan for more powers to the Scottish Government.

Better late than never George, but remember the Scots don't hate the English - they hate the present Conservative Government ;-)
