Finding Records

When I started researching family history I seemed to find lots of really FREE
records - but now I can't find source of good free records. Any suggestions?

Another point. My paternal line is Scottish through and through so it will be a sad day for me if the YES vote is carried in Scotland. My dad had about 28 aunts and uncles so I must have dozens (at least) of Scots relatives still living. Hope you don't breakaway Scotland. :-( :-(

There is still familysearch .org.(LDS) which offers a good run on Scottish records such as baptisms and marriages, some deaths.

freecen offers Scottish transcribed census.

freebdm offers free access to BDM indexes although they vary in years being freely transcribed.,,,,,,,England/Wales only though.

http://www.freereg.org.uk/ are transcribing some of the early Scottish PR.

Their English coverage is perhaps more comprehensive - many of the English PR they transcribe are also on FS. However, they will transcribe everything on the record, not just the vital data.

Don't forget English and Welsh gro references for BMD!

also look for the Online Parish Clerk sites .................... it's county by county.

Some are excellent, and have loads online .................. eg Lancashire.

Others haven't started

check this site for which counties have begun .

Thanks to everyone who has sent me tips and information. I am now trying to access workhouse admission records with no luck. I can get generalised info but not records of actual residents (will not call them inmates!)

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Depending on your area of interest, you'd probably have to visit the local archive for those..... at least in England/Wales you will :-0

Highly unlikely to find much on the inmates of Workhouses. Most records only consisted of Name, Date of Entry and Date left or Died.

They did not really record much more than that. :-)
