there were no certificates for births, marriages or deaths before July 1 1837 ................. that's when registration became law

and most Parish Registers before that don't show even the fathers ................ plus before about 1830, the mother's name is often omitted from baptism records.

I have seen a number of early baptism records, say before about 1820, where it will say something like the following ................

John son of Robert Smith and wife Esther daughter of William Roberts

those are very useful!

But that kind of information seems to be very much up to the vicar, or even the part of the country

Thanks again , but it doesn't fit with my family . the wrong David Thomas .I have found another one ,born the same year and died a year different . think that one is more likely . With the name of Thomas it's not easy . That's why I tried to find the wife's side. I didn't know there were no marriage certificates before 1837

birth years on the 1841 Census may be up to 4 years out, as the age of people over the age of 15 were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5

so it always wisest to try to find someone on later censuses, if at all possible.

This looks like the family in 1851 ............. with the eldest child either dead or working away from home. It does look as though both David and Ann were born in approximately 1816

on Parish Register records of marriages before July 1 1837, you do only get either "of full age" or "minor"

"of full age" means over the age of 21

"minor" means under the age of 21.

You will not find any other record in England and Wales before the start of registration on July 1 1837.

Registration began in Scotland in 1855.

I thought there maybe an image on FMP but ....No

I have not found any pre 1837 that gives any info re ages or parents ...the odd one has given an occupation though

Andysmum

Andysmum Report 30 Sep 2014 22:20

The above is taken from the Parish Registers and that is the only record there is, as official registration didn't start until 1837.

It is, of course, possible that the transcription has left out bits, but this I think is unlikely. Some parish records give ages, parents and even snippets of other information, but others simply give the bare minimum.

MR_MAGOO

MR_MAGOO Report 30 Sep 2014 22:20

If you've seen the parish register it should show the witness's. That could help determine the correct family.

What sort of certificate are you hoping to get pre-1837?

Did they have children, for mother's maiden name?
