Somebody on Google did. No original ideas there.

You must have paid attention in Chemistry/Science class in school........ obviously I didn't!

I usually buy bicarb in a big box...... it's the best loo cleaner :-D

It is something that has always been available. Maybe it is in the supermarket but you have never had to look for it.

It is sodium carbonate and, from looking at something online, it looks like you can turn bicarb into washing soda by baking it at 200c for half an hour on a shallow tray , giving it a bit of a stir sometimes until it changes composition by releasing its carbon dioxide and water (so they say!).

Thanks Sharron

I might try one of the local "hippy" shops that sell all the "greeny" stuff

:-)

Over here you can buy washing soda/soda crystals in supermarkets at £1 a go.

You can buy it on the internet too, and the bicarb.

Mine has an 'economy wash' - which I mistakenly though was the same as a half wash - it isn't - it's a cold wash.

Thankyou Sharron...... a bag of cherries coming your way.

Wondering where to get washing soda

:-)

A member (can't remember who) had an avatar that was a label from a child's garment.......... washing instructions stated to remove the child before washing.

My washing machine has a cold water setting, although it calls it "minimum".

My sister lives in Canada and I was surprised when she said that Canadian machines don't heat the water. If you want a hot wash you put hot water from your boiler into it.

I won't bother to tell you anything in future! Not if you don't bother to read it!!!!!

Cherry on top indeed.

1cup white vinegar

1cup washing soda

1cup bicarb

The recipe says to use half a cup of liquid soap but I use the ends of old bars of soap or a cheap bar from Poundland.

This I grind up, you can do this by scraping it apart with a knife. Something to do in front of the tele.

First time I just used the scrapings but last time I dissolved it in some boiling water.

Any road out, you put the dry stuff in a big bowl and tip the white vinegar on and the liquid soap. It will fizz like a good 'un!

Give it a good mix and, if you have dissolved the soap in water, it will form a sort of curd with a lot of water which you tip away immediately.

Leave the bowl somewhere warm if you can for it to dry out. Mash up the curd every day if you remember and after a few days it will be possible to mash it in to a powder.

I think you can add borax substitute if you want it for whites but I haven't tried that.

I find it better to use about a tablespoonful and put it straight into the drum rather than the dispenser.

I doubt if the washing powder has a cherry on top. That would stain your clothes ;-)

I make my washing powder now that I have found out how to and a tablespoon of that in a 30c wash does the job for us.

ZZzzz Report 5 Oct 2014 00:24

I think it is true LadyScozz and we don't have suitable washing liquid or powder for cold water washing. :-0

LadyScozz

LadyScozz Report 5 Oct 2014 00:08

Is it true that washing machines in the UK do not have a cold water setting?

I wash everything in cold water. Machine washable woolies go into a lingerie bag, that helps keep their shape.

DH's gardening clothes (they get some horrible things on them) are also washed in cold water (I don't care about the stains), and the final rinse has 1/4 cup of vinegar with a few drops of teatrea oil.

I get most stains out using nappy soak (really good for the white socks DH wears to golf).

I don't understand why anyone would set their washing machine at 40 degrees.
Surely it would look neater in line with all the other kitchen units.

It may be possible to use the machine but it still shrinks! :-|
