So sorry for your loss, Dixie sounds as if he was well liked and will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace.

I think those alarms that you can wear are essential for older people living alone, but so often people won't wear them. My Mum had one but on the day she was found on her floor she had not put it on as she was preparing to go out to the day centre. She must have been feeling well to the end almost as she had her key in the door ready to leave when the driver called for her and her lipstick was on the floor next to her. The neighbours had to break in through the back window as the key they had only fitted the door she had left her key in. The driver was the one who saw her when she didn't respond to his knock and he looked through the window. I do often wonder if she would have been helped quicker and therefore saved if she had been able to press the alarm for help.

We knew it was working as a few days before, she had accidentally pressed it as she got up from the breakfast table, she then went outside so didn't hear the people calling her to check on her. The neighbour was out so they called me and I rushed to get to her and called my brothers too then called her house to see if they had arrived, Mum answered and was astonished that there had been an emergency - not so astonished as me to hear her voice tho.

Any of you who has a button buzzer - please wear it! My MiL had one, she actually asked us for it - but she was still living in her own home and whenever I visited it would be lying on a table or by the telephone or something and when I said that's no good if you fall downstairs it didn't really get through to her.

She did use the telephone facility though when taken ill.

Mum has lived in so called sheltered housing for 17 years.

Originally there was a warden living on the premises and another one who did office hours during the week.

Now there is only a scheme manager who has to look after two sites so only mornings where Mum lives. Lovely man.

Mum has the red pull cords in her flat and the button pendant for around her neck. They have just recently cut the weekend calls so I am pleased that Mum wears the one around her neck.

Strange but when the scheme manager did a check on the information they have on file the pendant was not listed.

One consolation might be that it happened so fast the Dixie had no idea.

I am sorry to read you have lost your friend OFITG.

I am glad your doctor is arranging for you to have one of the personal alarms, they should be issued to everyone in sheltered housing and those likely to need one. My friend has one and it has proved its value more than once.

I'm so sorry to hear you have lost your pal, OFITG.
It's hard enough to come to terms with a death. more so when it's sudden. I hope, when you look back over the happy times spent with him, you can raise a smile.

Not knowing anything about the way sheltered housing works, I am at a loss to understand the sense any authority has in thinking it acceptable to have a Warden on duty only from 9-5 on Mon- Fri.....is nobody ever to have an emergency on an evening or weekend??
If this IS the case, then surely a personal alarm should be issued to all residents as a matter of course.
Or is my thinking far too logical for the real world?? :-|

I have to say that I've some concerns about what protection sheltered housing schemes provide for elderly people.

Our warden who is quite a nice guy does not live in the scheme, he lives about 7 miles away. He arrives at 9am and leaves at 5pm Monday to Friday, what he actually does I honestly don't know. I see him sometimes wandering around the scheme, it must be at least 2 months since I had contact with him and that was when he knocked on my door because as he wanted to check the smoke alarm, they check them every 3 months - I don't jest when I say that between these 3 monthly checks, I have no other contact unless I bump into him on the few ocassions I am out and about :-S

sometimes these warden controlled housings really dont work

My dads sister Caroline lived in old peoples flat in Scotland that had the warden living on site in one of the flats

Auntie was very hard of hearing in her later years so when I rang her I hung on and on to see if she would answer which she usually did. One time I did say to her I was worried cos you didnt answer several phone calls and she said with a giggle dont worry if anything happens to me I will let you know!!

Well it did happen and it was only the milkman delivering milk that she had every 3 days that he noticed his last delivery hadnt been taken in :-0

He went to the warden and expressed his concerns so the warden let themselves into her flat to find she had passed away . An autopsy found she had been gone at least a week

I wasnt impressed with how the warden looked after his duties.seemed to me he was living rent free but not being vigilant of his patch which was why he was there
