There are some deeply unpleasant people making deeply unpleasant personal attacks on many sites one would not expect to find them really.

I will include mumsnet as it has been mentioned, Moneysaving expert ( who knew people would be so nasty on what is essentially a 'help' site!) , a now defunct site for 'older people', let alone the weirdest of the weird who used to be on FR lol.

But probably not 'trolls' as per the current definition.

Oh, OK, although he said 'many' rather than 'all'. I'm not a Mum so I've never looked at it but have heard some people call it vile and unfriendly.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 20 Oct 2014 13:19

He mentioned mumsnet campaigns, Sheila.

Where did Rollo mention rape victims? Or have I missed something...wouldn't be the first time...

"Much as I dislike trolls and such I hold no candle for many of the campaigns of mumsnet and the po faced feminist brigade either."

Fortunately we po-faced feminists care not a jot for what you think, Rollo.

We will continue to demand that domestic violence is taken seriously by the police and tough sentences handed out to abusers; that rape victims are treated sympathetically by the police and the courts and that women receive equal pay for equal work.

And obviously we will continue to have absolutely no sense of humour so that men can feel free call us names.

Unfortunately for some people the "off switch" is just exactly that.

Quite properly there has to be a line beyond which texting or trolling using the means of interactive message boards is illegal. The devil as ever is in the detail - who draws the line, where is it to be drawn and how is it to be enforced ?

JoyBoroAngel

JoyBoroAngel Report 20 Oct 2014 12:07

I think they are best dealt with by ignoring them
or laughing at them :-D :-D :-D

lets face it everybody has a off switch ;-) ;-)

"I haven't noticed much in the way of RRing for a week at least."

Well one of my posts was RRd.

Much as I dislike trolls and such I hold no candle for many of the campaigns of mumsnet and the po faced feminist brigade either.

The obvious remedy for trolls is that Facebook, Twitter et al simply out them. However that would be bad for business and possibly contravene their human rights. FB could probably finance a trial which would be interesting.

Meanwhile trolls basically carry on doing what columnists such as Melanie Philips have been doing for years. The difference now is that everybody can post their 2c worth of nutty rant showing the world the wide open spaces between the trolls' brain cells. Quite apart from the usual subjects it is amazing the sort of bile that gets posted on very technical forums about, say, autos and computing.

Like it or not modern countries are supposed to be run according to laws not opinions and fear of ukip. Democratic laws focus on tolerance and due process. That everywhere you look from obscure message boards to the front bench this basic point seems beyond the wit of people to grasp is depressing. Free speech and law are under severe pressure in the UK.

On a practical level it is a sobering thought that a significant proportion of people seem to be mad despite managing to masquerade as sane some of the time. Hence road rage, glassing etc in pubs, failure to control children correctly, manslaughter over trivial issues, lycra bikers on the pavements, false accounting in high places, mendacious CVs, barbaric punishments ( real or imagined ) trolling ...

I once used to meet these problems head on but after having one employee knifed in Islington, my cars vandalised, a rain of eggs on the windows, my (disabled, foreign) wife stoned, my mother (over 90) threatened by a mob ( because she refused to support a campaign for the eviction of a released offender ) laying low sayin' nuttin' seems the best option.

Better hold on tight to nurse for fear of finding something worse.
