In the 1970's my husband's grandmother had alzheimers.
She was destroying everything that she longer recognised.

My MIL found her own father's family bible in the dustbin....Torn into little pieces but, she managed to salvage the front page containing most historical births and marriages.
Thank goodness because it highlighted one or two errors on the Aberdeenshire OPR!
I would still be looking for unknown children if I didn't have that page

Don't forget to have a look on E-BAY as loads of family bibles are sold on there.

Good luck, I hope you find it soon.

I have 'ownership' of our Family Bible on my Mum's side, but my brother has it at the mo, must get it back from him, he has no children so want to keep it safe. It badly needs updating too and I have most info for that job.

I had a small Bible that was my Mum's, a prize for attending Sunday School or similar. As we only had that Bible, my mother gave it to me to use at school in the 1960s, sadly someone 'borrowed' it from my locker (they didn't have locks) and never returned it. I was very upset, the school didn't seem too bothered about the theft. I often wonder who it was who took it and if they have it stuck in a loft somewhere or it's been thrown out now. There was a sticker plate inside with Mum's details on but of course it was in her maiden name.

Would love to have it back, maybe I should write to our local newspaper.

Thank you everyone you have given me ideas. Unfortunately searching would be more difficult, as now I live in New Zealand, but I will be sending some emails to relevant people, and you never know.

our family bible went missing years ago - we all believe it's with the husband of one of our cousins who died, but he denies all knowledge of it - don't believe him :-(

If you're near a cathedral try them - the head verger would probably be the best one to ask.. Many families donate family bibles to the church and I know of at least one cathedral which eventually ran out of storage space so the longer-stored bibles were sold to a collector. If the nearby cathedral had your family bible I'm sure they'd happily return it to the descendants.

In any case, the head verger may be able (after contacting the collectors known to him/her) to give you the names, addresses and phone numbers of collectors in the area where the family bible was with its holder. Failing that, try second-hand booksellers who may also have details of family bible collectors.

Contact local history societies in the areas that relatives lived at the time of the distribution of things. Sometimes they either take them or record them.

Unlikely.

You'll probably have to research and contact all living relatives, which by now could be the next generation.

Unless someone knew its 'value' it could easily have been thrown away or alternatively sold or give to a charity shop.

When Badger says to contact the church, he is possibly referring to researching parish records

My grand parents died in the 70s and their belongings were distributed round family members but no one remembers what happened to the family bible. Can anyone tell me if there is a site that I could ask if anyone has it in their possession, or knows where it could be. I would love to have it back for the family history.
Thank you
