We have two collies - Jess will be 12 in February and she competed in Agility, reaching Grade 6 before she retired at 10 and still goes to training every week, only it's not really training for her, more just enjoying herself. She was a rescue dog and had the worst recall of any dog they had had at the Rescue Centre (they didn't tell us that at the time, though). She was real handful to start with and still is a stubborn little madam!

The other one, Paddy, was a rescue from the pound in Ireland. He is completely different and doesn't really have many collie traits - he is quite calm most of the time and is known as Laid-back Larry at Agility. His agility career was very short lived as he just isn't interested and just walks round the course with me, stops before every jump, looks at it and then just steps over it (he is big dog but he doesn't go over full height as he will just go under them!); when we do demos, he gets to the top of the dog walk or A-frame and stops and looks at the crowd and as he is so slow, the beginners in our club love him because they can follow what he is doing, whereas Jess goes round so fast she is just a blur.

Good luck with your spaniel, Susan. A friend of ours has one who is sometimes brilliant (reached Grade 5 in one year) but at others is a complete nightmare.
