just been thinking about the tangerines we used to get at Christmas time when I was a child - they were individually wrapped in tissue paper which had gold writing on it - they had the real smell of Christmas - wonder why we don't see them anymore?

oh,,,,when you crept into the room on christmas moring and smelt tangerines the tree lit and the decs all put up ,,,,,""it was christmas,and magical""" ,,,,,,,it was the only time we had them,,,,,and always dived in the pillowcase for the nuts,,,,,,,,oh, russett apples from grandads trees that had been stored for a few weeks,,,,,,,,, :-D :-D.
plus christmas eve the smell of mincepies baking,

you can still get tangerines,but they lack the same smell.

Oh yes I remember that smell. We just seem to see clemantines these days. I can't eat oranges but could eat tangerines.

OH! Thanks for that Ann I was just saying to OH half an hour ago how we used to enjoy them thingy's and could we remember their name this was after we had peeled a Clemantine and found them Sour. At least I won't be thinking about the name now. :-D :-D

clementines are not nice - bought some in M & S - it said "sweet and juicy" on the pack and they were neither - so I took them back and had a refund

The ones you get nowadays have no smell and by the time you peel
them they are the size of a pea. :-(

What about blood oranges ?has anyone seen them about?....not very big..but...

I have to be careful with citrus now,but this has reminded me of the smell of a real tangerine!

I remember the tangerines in tissue paper

Some had some really nice design logos on them from the growers . We had an apple and tissue wrapped tangerine in our Father Christmas pillow cases together with our pressies

remember kaleidoscopes too - used to spend hours shaking them for different patterns and saying "Mum, look at this one" or "Dad, what d'you think of this one" until they were fed up to the back teeth with it all!!

I always got the Daily Mail Annual which lasted me for days, a Rupert Annual which I absolutely loved - I was mad on film stars and usually got a film album too

Dont forget the tin of Bluebird/Sharpes sweets,,,,with a picture on the lid that was at the bottom of the pillowcase.with the nuts and a tangerine.

I got into buying good condition ones a few years ago and a look at them brings back loads of happy christmases.

We always had a bowl of mixed nuts and they never were eaten.

A box of dates, wooden drum of Turkish Delight, ring of dried figs, box of candied figs and a jar of root ginger in syrup.

When did you last see candied figs?

we had dates with wooden stabber but only dad ate them,

and always a dish of sugared almonds - we had the dates with the wooden stabber :-D

we lived in an old cottage with huge fireplaces and Dad used to cut down a tree and after the fire had got going, put the trunk on, part of it up the chimney, and it used to burn down slowly all over Christmas, and when we went to bed on Christmas night there were usually nutshells all over the place, excepting for the almonds which no one could ever crack

We only ever got After Eights after our Christmas Dinner, never to be seen again till the following year LOL :-D :-D

we also used to always have a Tunis cake - it was a madeira cake with a thick layer of chocolate on the top decorated with marzipan fruits

Actually managed to get one in Sainsbury's last Christmas - first time I'd seen them for many years

I always got a box of Just Fruit Jellies and always left the yellow ones and still do now at Christmas :-D :-D

we had chocolate Mints Creams,,, maybe they were 3d shape I think.........in a cardboard tube,,,,,,,right posh. :-D.

and would it not be christmas without the big cut glass bowl of home made trifle with chopped nuts on top...and the must have tin of fruit cocktail...... :-D :-D but must be eaten with bread and butter,,,,,,,

I remember getting a tube of butterscotch gums in a selection box but I have never seen any more.

Those chocolate mints were Clarnico weren't they? Ypu could get them without chocolate on them as well.
