We used to have loads of cards. My father was a sales rep and sent company ones to his clients. In turn they sent him one. Some people became personal friends so that was another. He was a Free Mason.....more cards!

We moved form our first house before I started school. While I can't remember what we did them there, at the 2nd they were pinned onto the curtains and Sellotaped to the back of the door.

Mum used pinking shears to make tags from the pictures for the following year. I still do :-D
We had to be careful unwrapping larger presents. The paper was ironed then reused :-)

Yes Ann, they did,,,,,,,OH has his dads,War Album ,as its called and cards and letters are stuck in what his mum sent his dad while POW in Burma,,,,very small cards though....and worded on the lines ,while miles away or across the sea ....and the tiny writing to cram in as much as possible.

Yes, I remember we got loads of cards and strung them across the picture rails. I am not sure how far back I am remembering though. Presents I remember back when I was from about 3 (1943) but cards I am remembering probably post war years, thin paper as Kay said and 'traditional' pictures. did they have cards during the war? I suppose they did.

Oh we did,,,,,,,,they used to get strung across the fireplace on a string, :-D :-D.as did nearly everybody.

mum kept many spanning back to her early married life,my sister has them now,

we used to as children cut some out and stick them onto paper, some got used for shopping lists. :-D

nothing was a cute dog or cat ,mouse or anything like todays cards,,,,,ladies in big dresses and men with top hats walkling in the snow,a robin,a lttle cottage lite up,a church,a manger scene, and very thin card aswell.

Look, I wouldn't dream of doing this now but much laughter could be derived from a piece of string with a lump of bread tied to one end and some newspaper tied to the other.

You leave it lying out in the field to really annoy an old rook!

or a cardboard milk bottle top with the "straw" hole pushed out - then wind wool around and around the top and cut the edges and hey presto - you have a pom pom!!!

I kept the net stockings I used for the children for years, same ones every year, Never seemed the same not using the net ones. A couple of years ago I found one in the decorations box. It must have been 50 years old. I don't think i have got it now. :-D

Yes bath cubes and bath salts. We had an elderly couple living with their daughter and family next door to us and I used to make them up a little box of presents when I was about 11-14 years old. I'd make a decoration out of twigs and baubles, fill and decorate a glass jar with bath salts, that sort of thing. The bath salts always seemed to be Rose, hate the synthetic rose smell now, wonder if they hated them then. :-D

Yes,,,,,,,,,a proper skipping rope was a christmas favourite,,,,,large wooden handles with ball bearing ,painted with multi coloured hoops and a good strong rope, one always seemed to make its way into the presents.

oh and a box of hankies,,,,all embroidered with little flowers,

and bath cubes with matching talc crept in at about aged 12/13 usually from a relative...then it became something I bought mum..... :-D

where did the net chocolate stocking go? nowdays they are used for pet christmas treats, :-D

Ann so the info on your last two posts at 1038 and 1039 seem to differ re tangerines as they have a description of both mandarine and tangerine that are not exactly the same.
