GeeJayDubya Report 16 Dec 2014 18:47

I just noticed - I've been a member since May 2005. But I didn't take up paid Platinum membership until Jan 2012. As I changed computers around 2006 and again in mid-2013 there won't be any cookies from 2005 membership on this computer. And I don't have a clue as to what password I used in 2005.

So I go back to the email offering 50% off and click on the Lost Password thingy. They send me a Reset password which shows two accounts:

i) May 2005 to Jan 2015 (Nearly lapsed Annual Platinum.

ii) November 2009 (Registered)

I can choose which account to sign in to with the new password and it says 'Your other account/s will not be deleted, and you will be able to choose which account you want to sign in to each time you log in.'

And I am still waiting for the GEDCOM (it's about 8 or 9 hours now).

eRRolSheep Report 16 Dec 2014 17:38

Passwords and cookies are directly linked - cookies are small files downloaded to your computer from websites so that they can "remember" you (and your password).
Try changing your cookies setting to "ask every time" and you will be shocked at the number of cookies each and every website tries to load onto your computer.

As for membership on here - how can you have two different accounts with two different passwords but only one login (email)?

That's a bit like having a cashpoint card with two different pins.

GeeJayDubya Report 16 Dec 2014 16:30

Now here's the latest...

Yesterday I tried to download (export) my GEDCOM but after waiting several hours with nothing happening I had to shut down the computer for the night.

Tried to do the same this morning but after 6 hours I am still getting the message: 'Your tree is currently being processed. Please wait until your tree returns to the ready state before exporting another GEDCOM file.'

Have sent another email to Support.

Many folk have more than one email address.

ok. So you have two GR accounts on one email address. But those accounts must have different passwords? Have you forgotten the password for the second account?

Or do you not have to enter a password - because you do not un-tick the box on the sign-in page? I do that out of habit, even though my system is set to wipe all cookies when I exit Internet Explorer. I am not an IT expert, but I understand that the password is somehow tied in to the GR cookie.

GeeJayDubya Report 15 Dec 2014 21:52

As I only have one email address, I must be. Don't ask because I can't explain.

Whenever I sign in, I get the account containing my tree. So I can't actually access the supposed 'other' account.

You are running both GR accounts through one email address?

GeeJayDubya

GeeJayDubya Report 15 Dec 2014 19:12

I got a reply from the Support Team:

"Thank you for your e mail.

This offer is only for new or lapsed customers I am afraid.

As you have two accounts with us and one of them does not have a subscription this is why you were sent the offer e mail.

If you need any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us again.

With kind regards,

Karen Allan
Genes Reunited Support Team"

Proves how they value existing and loyal customers. Pity my subscription doesn't lapse until after the offer ends. Must be time to move on.

Don't know why you got that email whereas I did not. GR must be playing some sort of game? Maybe making offers on a random basis?
Did you look at the thread posted by MR_MAGOO? Note my first post on that thread. It was a real offer by findmypast.com. Yes, that is the US site. But is does incorporate most if not all of the UK records that are up on findmypast.co.uk. I don't know if any other GR member went for that offer? But I did - shortly after I posted. And, for US49:50 I now have a year's access to the wordwide data. (About £30, but won't know the exact amount until I get my next cc bill)
Why do that when I have platinum on here? Because it cost me less that paying for the four "add features" on here.

I took up a FMP half price offer a few months ago.... This was available to existing customers. My sub did not run out until the end of October but I was able to pay for this approx two months earlier and it started when my original sub expired

GeeJayDubya Report 13 Dec 2014 23:06

You have a point. But why do they send such emails to existing Platinum subscribers? (They may have sent it to your Platinum account Inky - but they did send it to mine.)

Inky1

Inky1 Report 13 Dec 2014 20:05

I have a 'spare' GR account - no fees, just a small tree. I had that email today, but have not had it on this, my platinum account:-

XXXXXXXX, get 50% off for a limited time!

We’re giving you the chance to begin exploring your family history with an incredible 50% off any Standard or Platinum Genes Reunited subscription taken out before December 24th!

A Genes Reunited Standard subscription is a great way to continue telling your family’s story, while a Platinum subscription gives you unlimited access to all of our census, birth, marriage and death records including World War 1 and World War 2.

Christmas is the time of year when our thoughts turn to family. Learn more about yours with 50% off at Genes Reunited. Sign up today using the code 12DAYS.

EDIT
" begin exploring " That indicates to me that this offer is not for existing paying members.

GeeJayDubya

GeeJayDubya Report 13 Dec 2014 17:09

Nowhere in the email does it say that the offer isn't available to existing subscribers.
I have switched off the automatic renewal setting as I have had a few technical problems over the last year with my Tree on Genes and was considering terminating subscription. However, the 50% discount would have been enough for me to stay at least for another year.

BeverleyW Report 13 Dec 2014 13:34

The LostCousins newsletter refers to this offer. It appears to be for new members only:

Genes Reunited have a new offer, which runs until midnight (London time) on 24th December and gives a 50% discount on ALL subscriptions when you click here and use the code 12DAYS

Note: this offer isn't available to existing Genes Reunited subscribers; also your subscription will renew automatically at the full price unless you change the settings on the Subscription Details page. Please bear in mind that the Platinum subscription offers only a subset of the records available at Findmypast - it probably isn't suitable for an experienced researcher like you.

give GR a phone call and ask them what they are playing at
i can not see why they would send you and email with an offer and then not let the code go throw

we all no that GR don't always play ball but this is very unfair of them

Kense

Kense Report 13 Dec 2014 08:58

Is the offer just for new customers? If so, I suppose you could create a new account with a different email address and not renew your old one. You would need to save all the stuff from your old account first and open your tree to the new account.

GeeJayDubya

GeeJayDubya Report 13 Dec 2014 01:34

Yes, I used the email link and that took me to subscription page.

I had a look at the earlier thread. Neither of the codes 12DAYS nor LCDEC works. Here is the email I got from Genes 5 hours ago:
