Acclaimed BBC1 crime drama The Missing will return for another series next year.

The good news for fans follows tonight’s gripping finale, in which the mystery of who abducted five-year-old Oliver Hughes was finally unravelled.

While this series starred James Nesbitt as Oliver’s distraught dad Tony Hughes, the follow-up will be led by different characters and be set in a new location.

It has not been revealed if Nesbitt will feature next time.

The series, watched by eight million viewers, will again be written by brothers Jack and Harry Williams.

It will be set over two different time frames and focus on the case of a missing person.

But in the second series the person who disappears will be an adult rather than a child.


A cryptic message at the end of tonight’s finale said: “To lose somebody can destroy a person. But to find them again, when so much has passed, Well. Sometimes, that can be worse.”

The sequence was voiced by lead detective Julien Batiste, played by French actor Tcheky Karyo, suggesting he may be involved in the new case next year.

Today the Williams brothers said: “We always knew the story of Oliver Hughes would have an ending. But in writing the first series we found there were many themes and issues we didn’t have the chance to explore.

"The response to the show has been fantastic, and we’re thrilled to be telling a brand new story which we hope will surprise and intrigue and tell an even bigger tale on an even more ambitious canvas.”
