A note of caution - only ever use System Restore if you absolutely have to.

You'll know if it is Windows 8 because it looks completely different compared to previous versions.

If you go to Control Panel you will find various options there for changing your sound settings - difficult to be more specific without knowing what you are running.

Whatever version of windows you are running generally the speakers will be plugged into the sound socket using a thin wire with micro plug. The socket on the computer will be GREEN and often the speaker plug is green as well. Speakers not being plugged in and/or not powered up or sound turned right down on the speaker are a common reason for no sound. Many speakers need a mains power supply check it is plugged in and turned on. One of the speakers will usually have a power light.

( the pink socket is for microphones do NOT plug speakers into this or vice versa. You may see other colors they are for more ambitious sound schemes such as surround sound.) If you have a desktop the pink and green sockets may be replicated on the front which is very handy for headphones.

I assume you have a pair of desktop speakers.

Some low power speakers use a USB connection which is is pretty ez to suss out as there are only two poss., plugged in or not. Philips do an excellent set of USB speakers for £20 and sometimes you can find them marked down by 50%.

It is possible that you have a multimedia keyboard which is trying to take over the sound but if you only paid around the usual price for a basic keyboard ( £ 10 ) then that is unlikely.

As has been pointed out the sound being muted by the software is also very common. Make sure it has not been muted by YouTube.

The various Fn keys will not do anything to or for the sound unless you have a laptop.

Beyond that you need a tech rating of at least 2/10. That should be enough to open control panel and check that (a) the sound is not muted and (b) it is not turned right down for any channel.

Very rarely the speakers themselves fail altogether and then of course you will get no sound.

When yr friend comes make a not of how he sorted out the sound you may be stuck again some time.

fn and 3 or 4 will raise or lower the volume of sound
fn and esc will mute /unmute sound

Am wondering why the new keyboard could not use the USB that the old one was plugged into - mine did ? :-)

My laptop is old and cant get sound or work out whats wrong so I plug in earphones in front of laptop and can listen fine with these!

Asda and got a refund and have now got a wireless one and it's fine - phew!!! Curry's are great at helping thickos!!!! as for the sound, I've come to the conclusion that whilst I was delving around the back of the computer to remove the oldkeyboard I must have somehow disconnected the sound - soI'll have to go delving yet again

Some breakdowns are more annoying than others.

Our gas CH / water failed yesterday brrrr. My OH is a "priority" user but we still ended up 24 hrs with no heating. The meter had failed for some reason and had to be replaced. The old one, a magnificent example of obsolete engineering, is now gone leaving a large space as the new one is miniscule by comparison.

The gas co has given us £ 20 credit for the trouble without being pushed.

Gosh that was good Rollo, although not so good to be without heat if your wife is a priority case.
