lavender Report 27 Dec 2014 00:31

I think it is nuts, Lesley. Not severe, though. Enough to know that I'm never to eat them.

I took an antihistamine which has helped after eating a chocolate which contained them. I'm going to have to read up on the subject.

Swollen lining of mouth, tongue, eyelids, face, slight itching all over, difficulty swallowing, and tingling round mouth. At least I know but keep thinking it can't be true.

So pleased the festivities are over, very stressful to be doing it all with just 48 hrs notice, not good for my stress levels and none of the psychiatric meds I've been on for 22 yrs. I barely slept for 2 nights but took diazepam last night and had a good sleep.

One of our daughters has a severe nut allergy [Anaphylaxis]

Her lips are ALWAYS the first to tingle, sometimes our daughter is lucky and antihistamine tablets will abate the reaction other times they wont, once she/anyone has used the EpiPen they should phone for an emergency ambulance.

I have been in A&E many times, anything from 4 to 24 hours while daughter recovers from anaphylatic shock.

I am not suggesting you have a nut allergy as I'm sure many allergic reaction start with tingling lips.

tingling around the mouth?

wondering........

I can't eat many of the commercial sauces, especially tomato sauce, because of the preservatives. I get tingles on my lips, and develop "ikkies" that look like cold sores.

Some people wonder why I cook so much, and make things that are readily available in the shops. I like to know what I'm eating!

With so many products causing issues no wonder it seems impossible to work out!

I have tried switching toothpastes LadyScozz, I tried a health food shop one, but my oh thinks it gives Him a sore mouth!

I think it is food as my mouth and tongue swell up and down during the day, it starts with tingling around the mouth etc.

Many thanks to everybody who has contributed to the thread, I've read with interest. :-)

Very interested to read all these posts. I experienced the same symptoms as you, Lavender.

It was eventually diagnosed as an allergy to Salicylates, found in various things, but especially aspirin.

Just hope I never need the supposedly life-saving daily dose!

Please let us know when you find out.

I know what you mean G Lass....... I found out I was allergic to nickel when I had my ears pierced, and they put nickel sleepers in. My ears looked like cauliflowers. I can't wear silver in my ears either. I'm an expensive woman to keep in ear-rings :-D

Funny thing is, I wear a medicalert bracelet, I think it's made of nickel, and it doesn't bother me at all :-S Maybe it's only my ears lol

GlasgowLass Report 23 Dec 2014 00:58

The only thing that I'm allergic to is nickel
I had 2 particularly horrendous outbreaks of nickel dermatitis.

One serious skin rash, ran from my wrist to my elbow and was caused by the WINDER on my wristwatch.
( During the night, I kept scratching the itch and the broken skin spread)

The other was caused by a wire in a bra... enough said already but, I ended up in a right old state

Itchy, itchy ouchy

lavender ~ have you changed your toothpaste?

:-(

I hope you're not allergic to nuts. That's a minefield.

I'm allergic to peanuts (and lots of other things). Packaging usually states "may contain traces of nuts". That's not very helpful. What sort of nuts?

In Australia, by law the manufacturers must state on packaging if something could possibly have nuts .... like a chocolate bar.... the same machinery is used for all sorts of things, and a "trace" might be left behind to go into the next batch.

I'm also allergic to hairy animals, cats, dogs, goats, horses etc......... but not my husband, who is a big hairy animal lolol :-D

I have what I and my GP believe to be a allergy which causes my skin to itch. I had an interview with a skin specialist asking what foods I ate, products and chemicals I came into contact with. I was then checked with a PATCH test. A sheet of small inch square patches with all different allergy causing items stuck onto my back. This was on a Monday morning. On the Wednesday back to hospital to have it removed to see if anything had caused a reaction. A further visit on the Friday for a further check up. Results were that I MAY have had a reaction to peanuts. Now I just keep nuts at arms length but I have had a try of nut products without it making my condition any worse but I am still wary of them.

lavender,

i have known for ages that certain things give me a headache, make my nose run and give me sore throat and cough, but the doctor just took no notice and gave me anti-histamine tabs.
It was only when i turned up at the surgery for the third time in 3 weeks wheezing like mad even though i was taking steroid tablets that i suddenly became an emergency and was rushed to hospital. I told them that i thought it might be my old dog that was causing it this time so they blood tested me ..i am not allergic to the dog but the test said all these other unspecified allergies.
Steroid inhalers are now stopping me wheezing thank goodness. :-)

I did end up in hospital once after penicillin, so know to avoid this now.

I did used to have extremely bad hay fever from the age of 14 years, used to have a jab to help at the time. The problem just disappeared when I hit 30 years of age!

Nuts are in so many products! When I shampooed today I looked at the ingredients in the conditioner, it said seed oil, I would suspect the shampoo might be similar.

I haven't been able to use eye make-up since my teens, it makes my eyes smart unbearably. I keep my foundation clear of my eyes.

I did have some heavyweight painkillers when having an operation, I was allergic to a couple of those, too.

If one is allergic to seeds and nuts, I'm now wondering if 'healthy' rapeseed oil is problematic. Hope it's not nuts..

*edit - I came off the lithium meds, thinking it was the issue.... no..

That sounds horrid Lavender and scary when you don't know for sure what causes it. It's good they have given you an epipen though and hopefully you will soon find out what to avoid.

I have had hay fever since so much rape seed has been grown. I can't have penicillin, but otherwise my allergies are to hospital alcohol wipes, most adhesive plasters including micropore and tegaderm dressings. I had no allergies as a child, they have all come as I've got older. :-S

Elizabeth,

i can have penicillin but not codeine.. i had a bad reaction to that , thank goodness i was in hospital at the time..
It should be in red on your notes if you are allergic to any medication.

lavender Report 22 Dec 2014 13:57

That is all so interesting, thank you everybody!

I think nuts may be a problem, am avoiding them but still getting the problem.

I do put garlic in everything, having it everyday in soups and roasted vegetables. It's so difficult, the doctor at the hospital said the 'prick' test (let's not go there) would be good hopefully. Hope I don't have to wait too long.

I was at the hospital at 2.00 am so really tired now. Mouth still terrible but has been for ages now. I've cut out the face cream, trying not to eat convenience stuff but still can't work it out. Suspect it is more than one thing.

Interesting to read that a nut allergy may have something to do with a birch pollen allergy which involves other fruits, too.

I have an epipen now which is reassuring. :-)

I'm allergic to penicillin.Found out, when I was small, I had measles, and apparently given the childs pink liquid penicillin, which caused me more problems, with a rash etc as well as measles spots.
I was tested for penicillin allergy, some 15 - 17 years later, as apparently I could have grown out of it, but still showed I had allergy to penicillin and not anything else in the pink liquid.

Occasionally, have been give a script for penicillin, by Doctors, and had to hand it back, and say can I have another antibiotic - and they query it - even thought it should flag up. Current Doc practice i good, they always ask if am alleric to anything,
