DH went past our local supermarket yesterday afternoon (Christmas eve).

The carpark was full, the other shops next door's carpark was full and there were cars parked both sides of the street!

Most of the cars had Qld plates.......... Queenslanders come here to get away from all the tourists who go to Queensland!

I'm so pleased we did our shopping on Monday.

Even at this time of year & no matter how 'smart' I think I am, I still can only eat one meal at a time.

"Ho ho ho"!

I agree, Cooper.

Laid up at the moment, can only just shuffle so hubby shopped. He's not complained and he's got some bargains.

From the farm - a huge bag of potatoes. From Sainsbury - a bargain in the wrapping - all down to 60 pence, stars, twine etc.

Luckily I bought most other things early but hubby's a good shopper with a list. Normally he hates shopping so it's quite a revelation to see how he's sought out bargains.

We decided this year to see what christmas food we really disliked, in no particular order here goes

Stuffing
pigs in blankets
figs/dates
crisps/dips (except ready salted multipacks)
Biscuits (except chocolate digestives)
Christmas cake
Panatone
mince pies
gooey deserts
Mini sausage rolls
cheese balls/straws etc
tins of chocolates

So why do I buy them every year :-S :-S :-S :-S

This year our treats will be things we like

Nice cheese
Chocolate digestives
Nuts in Shells
Ready salted crisps
homemade victoria sponge
and red/white wine and a certain irish cream tipple

saying that we are hitting the shops today for the essentials :)

Wishing you all a merry and peaceful christmas

I've seen people buy huge sacks of sprouts. It makes me wonder how many people they've invited round for christmas lunch. :-S

I went shopping today, after having my sharp tooth filed (the cause of my tongue biopsy in case it was anything sinister) I Decided it would be my last shopping day before Christmas.
Was amazed the market (normally on Wednesday, Thursday & Friday) was there.
As I trudged along, heard a cooo-eee, looked up - venison man was there :-D That's Venison man with a vegetarian girlfriend :-D

I bought most things, but Sainsbo's didn't have King Edward spuds, and their carrots had a use by date of 24 December.

Gloomily headed home, thinking I may have to come out on Xmas eve.

Had a text at 6pm from daughter - she was ll (possibly infectious) headed Aldi/Waitrose way (they're next to each other) did I want to go?

:-D :-D :-D Yes!
Got it all. Went to Aldi first, then what I couldn't get in there (spuds) I bought in Waitrose :-D

I didn't kiss her. :-|

I went shopping yesterday (Monday), there's only one supermarket in town, and it was PACKED. Worst thing was the little gatherings of people yacking and taking up all the aisle space, and getting cranky when others said "excuse me". :-P

I hate to think what the shops will be like today and tomorrow.

Thanks for the reminder....... I forgot to get sprouts :-(....... no biggie, we'e got loads of other stuff. Crazy really, a hot summer and we're stuffing our faces with hot food.

Speaking of other stuff........ we have two big fridges, and they are both STUFFED!! There are two legs of ham & a defrosting turkey, as well as loads of veggies....... DH came home with 2Kg of prawns; no idea how me managed to get them in the fridge.

Waiting to hear him howl when his beer won't fit in.

:-D

How many times did I use stuff or stuffed...... and I didn't once mention stuffing :-D

PS........ I'm stuffed too.

Last night there was something said about how many tons of brussel sprouts are eaten over the Christmas period. I think that they should have said how many tons are thrown away. When I see in some peoples trolleys bags and bags of brussel sprouts it amazes me. I hope to get through Christmas without eating a single one!

JoyBoroAngel

Lol - fine if they are going to eat it, but a waste of money if it ends up in the bin.

On the other hand, if it helps your employers make a profit, there's less chance that you'll lose your job ;-)

Yes I agree about the packet sizes Detective but we are selling veg at 49p per packet and I have been told so many times how good that is ....so I got two or three!!!! GGGRRRRR OMG!!

Yes the entertaining thing is to be taken into account but one guy is away for christmas but didnt want to come home to nothing so got the whole lot for when he gets back!!! :-S

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 22 Dec 2014 22:07

If they are 'entertaining' it could be the fear that there won't be enough.

Children and partners are home 24/7 for at least a week, possibly longer so thats one extra meal a day to cater for.

Some of the waste could be spared if the supermarkets sold smaller quanities. We don't want half a kilo of sprouts - 8 sprouts would do! Even in frozen packs, thats impossible to buy. (we've still got half a frozen packet in the freezer from last year ;-))

Joy is probably on to something re not going shopping until 2015.
The shops are only shut for one day - as long as you have the money, you're not going to starve.
