:-D

I love my coffee, especially the first one of the day, it wakes me up :-D

I have coffee, just coffee, no milk & no sugar. Not on a diet, I just like it that way.

But I've never heard of some of these.......

http://food.ninemsn.com.au/galleries/475743/what-coffee-is-that-a-guide-to-beans-and-brews.slideshow

Look at all of them, you'll be surprised :-D :-0 :-0

I don't fancy coffee & tonic water :-S

and I REALLY don't fancy coffee that has "passed through" an animal! :-(

I'm not Mormon, but I'd steer clear of ANYTHING that had passed through a monkey, or an elephant..... or any other living thing.

:-(

My first coffee of the day is actually two cups ,skimmed milk no sugar and made by heating the milk in the microwave for 1min 30 secs and then stir in a spoonful of instant coffee.

Can't do without my morning fix . Am on my second cup as I type this lol

milk has passed through cows which are not the brightest apple in the orchard but def. living animals ; then there is goats milk, cheeses, eggs ... all have passed through a living animal at some point

I am a coffee addict
I would try almost any but, It needs to be strong and not made with milk.

I have one of those little barista style machines but it needs to be cleaned too often.
The milk frother thingy gets a bit yucky.

I was given a new machine at christmas, the type that uses Tassimo pods.
With it, I was given half a dozen boxes of coffee pods ( 18 in each)

They were all gone by the begining of January, replaced with supermarket purchases and eventually an online bulk buy!

All Costa Americano.... Having one right now!

rofl at jumbo coffee

........ but the "special" coffee beans are passed through different places than milk!!

Instant coffee? yuck, can't stand the stuff........ I think it's made with floor sweepings.

Most of the water we drink has passed through many people in it's time!

Rollo, roasting your own beans your kitchen must smell fantastic! :-D :-D

Back in ye olde 1970s there was a little shop in Gloucester that sold coffee, roasted and ground on the premises. The smell was divine, Dad and I used to nip in to buy some for the stove-top percolator as a Sunday treat. Never have liked instant and prefer espresso with no milk added.

Instant coffee better grades such as Carte Noir Nescafe Columbian 37 are made with quality Arabica coffee beans and are perfectly ok.

OTOH there are many such brands as Birds, Maxwell House, Douwe Egberts, Kenco which are best avoided unless you are in the habit of putting a lot of milk and sugar in the coffee in which case it doesn't matter.

The mistakes made by millions are (a) to use boiling water - it should never be boiling and (b) putting in milk. If milk is added it should not be very much. A blob of cream is better. Brown demerara raw sugar lumps are much better than white sugar.

Decaff coffee is not coffee.

It is very uncouth to serve large mugs of instant coffee but the Anglo Saxons seem unable to resist this.

I have no idea why people fork out a king's ransom for capsule coffee machines though it is very good business for the vendors and looks flash in the kitchen.

For ground coffee all that is needed is a box of filter papers and a funnel of some kind to hold the paper. I use a simple machine which cost about 20 bucks long ago. If you don't live in a Latin country ( where there is always a brasserie around the corner ) then a small trad. espresso machine is worth buying. I inherited mine but it still works fine if a bit messy.

SheilaWestWilts seems to know her coffee :-)

tip: how to roast green coffee beans.

You may hit lucky and find a table top drum roaster of the kind used by blenders for making up samples. Probably you won't so ...

Make sure the beans are at room temperature ( they keep best in the fridge ).
Use either a small copper frying pan (best) or a non stick frying pan and a smidgeon of olive oil. If gas hob fine if electric use the halogen plate if avail - high heat needed.
Warm the pan.
Put in the beans. Keep them shuffling about in the pan by shuffling the pan DON'T use a wooden spoon. The beans will gradually expand until the inside is exposed. Time depends on the beans and the weather but not very long. The time from being nearly ready to ready is only a few seconds so pay attention.

DO NOT BUY SANTOS BEANS as a beginner you will set them on fire. That is why they are cheaper.

Turf the beans out onto kitchen paper. Grind with a small coffee grinder - the little electric ones are fine.

You can also make up your own blend using more than one sort of coffee. A good start is Mocha/Mysore/Kenya or Java with 50% Java or Kenya.

Until you get the knack the tendency is to overcook the beans but it doesn't take that long to work it out. Bin over/under cooked beans. Once you have the knack it doesn't take long to roast/grind the beans and then the kitchen smells great and the coffee is wonderful. I like mine with thin toast and Coopers marmalade.

Making the coffee this way does not save any money it is just good for the taste buds. It is a certain way to get your partner out of bed :-)

I am more a tea drinker but do have a coffee once in a blue moon :-D

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 25 Jan 2015 20:47

I usually have one coffee a day, sometimes 2 on a Saturday .............

.......... but only when I'm out, because I only drink a medium latte made with soy milk, and preferably served with more foam rather than less.

No sugar, but a sprinkling of cinnamon on the top of the foam

I would much prefer it made with 1% or skim milk, but unfortunately am now dairy intolerant.

OH bought me a large very expensive espresso / latte machine some years ago. It has been passed onto our daughter, 'cos it was difficult to use in our small kitchen (lack of room)

I was picky about the kind of coffee we used when I was able to drink "plain" coffee ....................... no instant, and only certain kinds of beans

We bought ready roasted beans, and I ground them as needed with a home grinder

We used the Melitta filter funnel system .......

............... OH still uses that, or a French press, to make 1 or 2 cups a time ffor himself during the day or when we have guests

he's a philistine .................. he has a mug of instant coffee at breakfast, every day :-)

I was really shocked when in Australia back in 2000, and travelling with my down-under cousins along the Victoria coast.

We had dinner at what seemed a very nice place, and saw they had cappucinos and lattes on the menu ................. and a BIG machine in the corner near the kitchen

We ordered 4 large cappucinos, and then I watched as our server brought a tray holding 4 large cups of coffee out from the kitchen to the machine ...............

then she foamed the milk and poured it on the coffee

Tasting proved what I had feared ............

.......... 4 cups of instant coffee made in the kitchen and then foamed milk added

Later in the trip, I was with friends in Queensland, told this story, and friend took me to a very nice coffee shop in Brisbane, saying "you'll get real coffee here"

we did :-D
