I worked Saturdays and summer holidays from the age of 11 .....................

but my summer job when I was 16 was in a small grocery store in our area ................... it was actually part of a small chain in Oldham and area. I think they had about stores altogether.


The manager of the store was in his late 50s/early 60s .................. and he made me do a lot of the running about.

BUT I had to learn how to cut the butter and cheese from their big blocks, how to pat them into shape, and wrap them in white paper.

I remember Mum used to send me to the butcher on the main road, just round the corner from our house to buy minced meat ..........

........... I had to ask for a nice piece of steak, look at it, then ask him to mince it

I continued to do that, even after she died, and right up to when we left the UK, whenever and wherever I bought minced meat.


She also taught me to buy braising steak, and cut it in cubes for a stew.



I think the idea was that she did not trust what was in ready minced beef or stew cubes

There Was Denny Mincer, Tailor in Barking Road. sort of Plaistow,

used to do suits for many of the west ham football team........
