About time.

Terrible news. I'm keeping an eye on the Stock Market reaction.

And the 'current' PM said VAT rate will remain unchanged. Excellent news.

I'm off now to celebrate something or other with a plate of Colcannon.

Danny Cohen, Head of BBC TV, has had a very negative edge against Clarkson going back quite some time.

Cohen's contributions to BBC TV include these inforgettable programs for Channel 4 Fonejacker, The Inbetweeners, Supernanny, Cutting Edge, The Great British UFO Hoax, The Games, Skins.

He moved onto BBC3 ( which is to become an internet only channel ) where he commissioned some more unforgettable TV - Blood, Sweat and T-shirts/Takeaways, the Undercover Princes, Britain's Missing Top Model, The World's Strictest Parents, The Adult Season, Russell Howard's Good News, Young Voter's Question Time, Stacey Dooley Investigates, Lip Service, Lee Nelson's Well Good Show, Being Human and Mongrels.

These increased BBC3 share of mostly non licence paying 16-34 age group by 60% but not enough to stop the closure of BBC3 as we now know it.

Nothing daunted he also commissioned "Family Guy" and brought Tasmin Lucia-Khan into the newsroom. Happily Tasmin has moved on. Did anybody noptice?

All of these and a degree in English Lit. from Oxford made Danny the boy wonder of UK TV (he can read) and so he became the youngest ever controller of BBC TV. He has commissioned Poldark, Call the Midwife, Great Expectations (again) and the Village.

These suggest that the beeb may see its future as a craft network specialising in ye olde times. Def. no room for silly programs featuring 60 year old school boys, fast cars and slow cars driven fast or people who can stand on their own two legs for a couple of hours. (*)

Anybody who has met Danny over the past 30 years will know that team bonding and respect are not very high on his to do list and so it did not take very long for Danny Cohen and Clarkson to rub each other up the wrong way. The "sacking" was inevitable though financially much better for Clarkson then walking out.

Clarkson and his team will have no problems sorting out a lucrative deal with ITV/Sky or even one of the internet channels. OTOH Danny Cohen has done himself no good at all. He is not going to be able to fix the financial black hole.

(*) Here is an example of current BBC programming - C19 murders on the railways. Sadly due to budget cuts the series had to make do with 1950s free clips for the steam locos.

Current BBC TV using material from post 1990 authors or in depth stuff about serious issues - nil.

As an entertainer, I think he does his job well

however if he was voilent as is being rumoured, he deserves his contract not being renewed, its terrible.

ill miss top gear mind :-(

JoyBoroAngel Report 25 Mar 2015 17:38

his program brings in the most money for the BBC
i don't agree with him attacking anybody id he did

but what do you expect when the BBC have paid the wages for years
for people who have done much much worse than he has

I think to get rid of him is them losing a massive cash cow
( not that I even like him )but money is money

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 25 Mar 2015 17:44

That's no excuse to carry on employing him, though, surely?

You cannot employ a person accused of physical and verbal abuse just because they earn the company money - that's plain daft and gives out all the wrong messages.

Apparently the police are investigating the incident.

http://dave.uktv.co.uk/top-gear/top-gear-features/article/10-things-you-didnt-know-about-top-gear/

Clarkson sold his 50% share in TopGear to the BBC.
I wonder how much it is worth right now ?

Mild fracas including trashing of office furniture and fittings and low grade fisticuffs are fairly common in the media, advertising and I.T. industries - Steve Jobs shared a lot of personality traits with Clarkson. While working for a large well known media co. ( not in the UK ) a staff member slung his (old style heavy) monitor through the window into the street ... fortunately nobody was hurt. The Charlie Hebdo crowed could get pretty physical too and had a perfect mastery of Paris argot which you will never find in Harrap.

I don't think the BBC have any chance at all of keeping Top Gear on the road. The show is built around Clarkson. While the Hamster has created good programs of his own their credibility rests on his membership of TopGear. Capt Slow without T.G. would be reduced to such stuff as "Just A Minute" and guest appearances on Antiques Road Show. The only person I can think of who could have done the job was Robin Williams sadly no longer with us.

Who with the absolutely necessary mega talent on monster ego would or could take on the job?

What on earth they can do to find something like it to peddle to world tv heaven knows. Poldark on a charger doing a fast circuit with a buxom wench in the saddle probably won't hack it. It is no use getting all PC and having a women presenter 'cos half the earnings came from the Arabs.

The horse has bolted, a TV kingdom for a horse.

The Tories will truly be sharpening their knives for the BBC if they have any sort of control after May. Milliband prob. won't grant them more money or let them off changes in not having the TV license how can he?

So a lot of people will be getting their P45s after all.

to employ people who have been accused of much worse
and covered up for them :-(
