Today I went shopping for an outfit to wear to a family lunch tomorrow.

As a larger lady I have few choices of shops to go to in Hastings. I could have bought trousers in a wide amount of colours and lengths, but skirts were a big problem. The few stocked were mostly so short that when sitting down I would show a large amount of unshapely leg, plus my large arthritic knees. I finally had to settle for a lined summer one and even then the choice was a blue floral or a blue patterned one.

Am I alone in wanting a plain coloured longer skirt?

As a larger lady too I Am afraid I have given up on dresses and skirts and wear trousers all the time

Can dress them up or down with tops and accessories and fashion or sensible boots

Most of the skirts on offer for my size make me look enormous :-(

You are not alone Carol. I do where trousers but as I was going to my stepsons wedding a while ago I thought a skirt would be nice. I am a large lady too and also need a long skirt to hide my scar from my knee replacement. Did I get lucky ?? No way and ended up in trousers :-(

All the skirts seem to have lurid patterns on them this year. I usually wear trousers these days, had a pale pink trouser suit for Grandson's wedding.

I also am a larger lady, and mainly wear skirts ............... long skirts

I don't think I have a skirt that is shorter than the bottom of my calf, and most are at least ankle length.

Some of the skirts I wear are several years old .............. because of the difficulty of finding them

I was lucky last summer ................ one of the online companies I use had several long skirts, and they were on sale

I promptly ordered 3 ................... and was about to send one of them back as it was a little shorter than I liked, when I heard that the company had declared bankruptcy :-(

so I had to keep the skirt ................. it's not bad, just not perfect!

Also, maxi skirts were huge at one of our major department stores, and I bought 2 in the same style, different colours.

I might have to work a bit at getting the dressy top for a wedding though :-)

My problem is being a double mastectomy ............... and being much more comfortable without a bra and prostheses. It's quite a shock when I have to dress up :-)

I spend a lot of time looking for blouses that fit better rather than just a blob of material hanging from my shoulders, none are very flattering on me.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 27 Mar 2015 20:29

I almost never wear blouses ....................

turtleneck tops with long sleeves in winter

I gave up on Evans and others on the high street years ago. All my clothes, I only wear trousers, come from Sixteen47. More expensive, but far better design and quality.

Do not do frilly, flouncy or shiny. Which for some reason high street shops seem to think all larger ladies want to wear.

And I am 5' 7" tall, anothervfailing on the high street, they also seem yo think if you are large you are under 5'5"!

Rant over. :-)

Ladies go to Bon Marche, they have a section for the larger ladies. You can do online shopping and they regularly have special offers. Every Sunday they change the special offer.

It only costs £6.00 to get an order all the way out here, it doesn't matter how many items you order.

The smallest size is 8-10 and it goes right up to 32.

Sorry ladies I'm now in the smallest size but I too struggled when larger as I'm short.

Bonmarche is one of the few choices I do have... if you go on their site/skirts/maxi you get a 'choice' of 1... a chiffon number. :-|

The skirt I did get does not seem to be available online.

According to a magazine I read the other day midi skirts are the thing this summer. I have dozens of skirts, all longer than knee length and many are from charity shops, several from Bon Marche and lots I have had for years.

I never wear jeans or trousers except for summer three-quarter cotton trousers. I like separates so you can mix and match and get more variety than a selection of dresses.
