Like AnnC as I live alone I look in on the chat board and I think there are many more like us who post now and then on threads that we can add to.
I keep away from controversial ones that have spoiled the chat boards.

Why don't we all try to add fun topics or topical ones.
The threads that seem to go along nicely are the Welsh ,Aussie,...Roll call ...and a few others...in fact some have been a lifeline ,like Tec for instance who has great comfort from the support...also Dizzi and others.

The subscription is affordable for most...I just hope we don't let it rest in peace, let's add our bits of news and ignore the nasty posts ?

Why is there a chat board if it's not for chat

I'm sticking with the GR Chat boards. I think most fellow contributors are gradually getting used to some of my quirky comments. Words are my favourite insanity & long may these avenues of conversations continue.

'Words are the dress of thoughts, which should no more be presented in rags, tatters, and dirt, than your person should'. (Earl of Chesterfield).

"quotation is a handy thing to have about, saving one the trouble of thinking for oneself, always a laborious business"

That's a quote.

I much prefer...

"A facility for quotation covers the absence of original thought"

Disregarding the ebb and flow of posts on this board, it is really apparent that the research boards are less busy, I think that's partly because those who were going to research have been doing so for years and have put their money into sites with more records and partly because the last major source of info put online, the 1911 census, has been and gone, and those who are younger/newer to genealogy possibly need the 1921 census as a kick start?

The searches for living relatives seem to be the main interest now, mostly birth parents or siblings.

The records on this site are rubbish compared to other sites it certainly isn't value for money, I have met some wonderful people on GR who have become very close life long friends even those who we have sadly lost. I add to a couple threads on the chat board like Mersey's always nice to chat to pleasant people on there but sometimes I read some of the threads on chat and think OMG kill me now, like the ones people post to announce they haven't time to answer emails etc .....it has certainly lost its sparkle...if it went would I miss it no not all, so to answer to your question ..yes its well past its sell by date.

in my opinion ................

GR is being killed off ................

there is no support

technical problems abound and are rarely corrected

we just don't see GR staff posting as we used to

it has never been really updated and "modernised" ............... there are now newer and easier sites to use, and a lot of them are free.

I've never used the records because I've never needed to and have subs and memberships in other sites ...... but I've heard many times that they are not as good

why??

again, in my opinion .................. very simple

the company was forced to go through the competitions board before its purchase was approved, because it would control 3 of the 4 most popular genealogy sites in the UK, and had to agree that it would not close any of the sites.

However, if one of those sites starts failing, and usage and membership drops, then they have a good business case to go back to the board, and say "look". It will no longer be a viable site, so yes, bye bye GR

I can't quite work out whether they will keep GR as a free site to build your tree, which is how GR started in 2002, or unite it with fmp ................ which was their flagship site when this all began 5 years ago.
