...and have a guess at the outcome of the General Election? I will start it off. Going by conversations I have had in the pub, I predict a small overall majority for the Conservatives. I will admit to my stupidity if I am wrong.

I think Labour will gain from the Conservatives in English marginal seats but lose to the SNP in a load of Scottish seats.

I reckon a small Labour lead with not enough MP's for an overall majority, the SNP holding the balance of power, and a bit of a constitutional crisis developing.

It's too close to call, plenty of time for a few slips ups. ;-)

I doubt there will be an overall majority, so we'll be in coalition land again. Looking forward to seeing Farage and his loons crashing and burning.

I reckon David Cameron will win

Dermot

Dermot Report 24 Apr 2015 14:25

A Hung Parliament will be next month's result, if some opinion polls are to be taken seriously.

With no party achieving a governing majority, horse-trading will be needed with the smaller parties jockeying for even a smidgen of power. Don't ignore Nigel's potential in these negotiations.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 24 Apr 2015 14:59

I doubt he'll have a seat, Dermot, if the polls where he is standing are anything to go by.

There will probably be a huge row and while it is sorted out Cameron will remain prime minister until somebody manages to pull a coalition together.

Let's deal with the simple stuff first. UKIP might hang on to Clacton 'cos their MP is well entrenched. Reckless will be out in Strood. Farage is odds against to take Thanet. With one or even two MPs in the house UKIP influence on any coalition building will be nil UNLESS ... (*)

The SNP looks set to take 40+ seats in Scotland. The party seems to be totally schizoid about whether the London parliamentary party would be an extension of Holyrood and England its latest colony or if its MPs would have a primary duty to participate in and uphold the latter. The first view looks most likely.

The Tories claim that Labour will make an evil coalition with the SNP. They won't, the mutual hatred in Scotland is deep and bitter. Labour have every intention of winning back Scotland unlike the Tories who had a Scottish maj. within living memory.

The LibDems says they will support the largest party and given they have got used to red boxes, limos and such would go into coalition with "the largest party" whoever that may be and how defined.

The Irish ragbag are incapable of following any line except pork barrel politics and could not be relied upon to sustain any minority government.

The devil is what would be the largest party?

It is more than likely that the Tories will get the most votes cast BUT thanks to the failure of boundary reform it is odds against that this will translate into having more seats in the Commons than Labour.

Nevertheless as incumbents IF the Tories have the most seats they will likely insist in forming a govt. They would very quickly find themselves unable to govern as Lab/SNP could vote down every last thing including the budget. Under UK law supply ( money ) is for one year only so any such govt would run out of cash.

At one time this would have forced new elections but thanks to the new 5 year rule a 2/3 vote would be required and the SNP/Labour could block that. A Cameron govt would be forced to resign and give Labour a go. It would not be able to block Labour in the same way with a retinue of Irish MPs and the odd kipper.

Ah but the SNP want this that and the other ... oh no says Milliband you can vote with us when you want eg bedroom tax but if you get naughty about Trident or budget cuts we will get support from YES our new friends the Tories. So the SNP would be nailed to the wall and all their bright hopes turned to rust.

So there you go barring some unforeseen change in the polls over the next two weeks the UK will end up with Milliband as PM possibly after a messy epilogue for the Tories.

Such an all too likely mess would seriously spook the markets and create a generation of bitterness. For that reason the possibility of doing a Merkel is being seriously talked about behind doors tighter closed than Hatton Garden and miles from any Newsnight mike.

Such a Lab/Tory nat. govt. would undoubtedly be the best thing for the UK.

The political downside for Labour (if it was the junior partner) would be the dreadful memory of Ramsey McDonald. So if Lab. did have fewer seats than the Tories it would not happen.

OTOH the Tories might be happy to form a largish junior partner to Labour.

Why? Well the UKIP tendency would probably break away taking 30 troublesome MPs with it (* UNLESS op cit) . These could be replaced with more malleable candidates, the delights of power remain and both the LibDems and SNP get spiked as surely as Dracula.

Scotland may well be given the sole budget responsibility Sturgeon craves. It would lose any say on the London budget and would very quickly find itself in the same mess as Holyrood in 1807. Then as now England would drive a very, very hard bargain which would make Germany's offer to Greece look cuddly.

Take away the more oafish ministers such as May, Osbourne, Duncan Smith, Gove, Patterson then there is not in truth such a yawning gap between Labour and a Tory party minus its mad fringe. Cameron is in a hurry to be off in any case.

Given that the 5 year rule has effectively created a multi party system we might as well have PR voting ... except it has been rejected. Larf. "Mother of Parliaments" or a shambles. Take your pick.
