Diphthongs refer to pronunciation.

Things like Æ, æ, Œ, œ etc are called ligatures.

You can access them through Character Map or create a shortcut if you use them a lot.

Also, you can enter special characters in things like Word by clicking on the Symbol button on the Insert tab or (in some programmes) by pressing the Alt key and at the same time typing in a code (this will not work in everything but is useful to know).

eg

Alt+0198 gives Æ

Alt+0230 gives æ

Alt+0140 gives Œ

Alt+0156 gives œ

There are dozens of others.

On a laptop you will probably need to use your number pad rather than the numbers across the top to do this (make sure NumLock is turned on).

If anyone wants a long list of Alt codes, let me know.

Never know that is what is was called.

You can have examples in the middle of a word such as paedophilia were the a and e are written without a gap. As most text is now typed, its fallen out of favour

Sharron

Sharron

Sharron Report 28 May 2015 11:44

It is a capital A with the three horizontal strokes of a capital E eminating from the right down stroke.

Can you picture that? It is the first letter of the name of a Saxon King.

Sharron, there is an invisible font and you have to know where it is and what problem it is causing.

Sharron Report 27 May 2015 12:18

Sorry Island. I am totally inept at anything regarding computers and I thought you were asking a different, quite legitimate, question of Pat.

Also, you will see that your reply and mine had been posted at exactly the same time. I had not read your reply when I posted but thank you for your help anyway.

I didn't I know what Character Map meant anyway.

Totally inept, not just a bit.

I take it you are ignoring me, for reasons known only to yourself, Sharron. I was only trying to help.
