Hi all,
Have a major problem with my great grand aunts husband they married in Waterford Ireland 1859 he was a ships captain. As you know we've lost all the 19th century census records for Ireland. He only appears in one census the 1871 Welsh one aboard ship off the coast of Monmouth. I can be sure its him as his First Mate is his wife's brother in law William Frampton, they were inseparable even married two sisters within weeks of each other. The census return gives his place of birth as Mendlesham Suffolk and his age as 34 which would give him a 1837 birthdate.William died in the 1870s but John Edward seems to have disappeared no death cert , his family emigrated to Georgia USA in 1890's and Mary Anne his wife is recorded as a widow in the 1910 census. I am guessing that his mother was called Phoebe as that's what he named his first daughter his eldest son was John Edward so his father could be either John or Edward. Another family researcher has suggested that he deserted the family and remarried in Scotland using the name John Poole Sheppard , this would make him the son of Edward Sheppard and Phoebe Poole born Suffolk 1834 who gained his First Mates papers in 1854. This John Poole Sheppard only appears in the 1881 Scottish census as a Captain but has a John Edward Sheppard born Ireland 1861 as his First Mate. I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt at the moment regarding a possible bigamous marriage. Can anybody shed any further light on this slippery customer .

Hi Marian
I am just about to go out so have only had time for a cursory look. However, the birth date seems very likely to be right. There is a John Sheppard whose birth is registered in the first quarter of 1838 in Hartismere, Suffolk so he would have been born end 1837 or beginning of 1838. Hartismere district covers Mendlesham. If you think this might be your man, sending for the birth certificate would confirm his parents names.

Hi Kucinta
Yes this is the man we came up with too only one problem he married in Scotland circa 1891 claiming to be a widower and Mary Anne only died in a house fire in 1919. The John Sheppard who married Mary Anne was an adult convert to Catholocism , he was baptised in Waterford shortly before their marriage in 1859. My other research buddy is convinced its the same person but I'm still not convinced . He consistently gave his name even in court in Ireland as John Sheppard and none of his children carry Poole as part of their name. I'm thinking that they were cousins as Mary Anne's son John Edward born 1861 is on board John Poole Sheppards ship as Mate in the 1881 Scottish Census
