As Detective posted, the usual reason for not getting results on searches is entering too much information

For example, I was looking the death of someone on freebmd and I entered his birth year. Nada

I removed the birth year, and got his death registration at once.

BTW ............. most of us do not use GR for bmds ......... we use the free site, www.freebmd.org.uk

Up to 1873, it wasnt compulsary to register a birth. Sometimes family couldn't afford it or assumed that a baptism would be sufficient.

You may be in-putting to much detail in a BMD search. Familiarise yourself with registrations districts. This link is quite a useful starting place

BTW - GR tends to concentrate on English and Welsh BMDs etc. Scottish ones are on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/welcome.aspx
You might also find some 'events' for Ireland as well as the rest of the UK on https://familysearch.org/

Well without some names so we can take a look it's difficult to say why
Sometimes putting too much info in doesn't find a match because maybe a second christain name is just an initial on the BMD,S

Where are you looking ?? FreeBMD is a great free tool to use

Hi all, I am very new to this and I am currently trying to collect information regarding all corners of my family tree. I seem to be hitting brick walls, when I find some information regarding an ancestor I use this to prompt a further search but more often than not I cannot find anything.

For example, I will find a great grandparents marriage records but when I use the DOB to try and find a birth record or a death record it doesn't find anything that matches. I am also finding it difficult to trace the females of the family further back that 3 generations as the only info I can find is on a census but that has no record of a maiden name.

Can anyone help me in how to delve deeper into the history of my family.

Thanks
