I'm not sure what I think of Ancestry at the moment.

I know a lot of people on the boards complain a lot about GR but I have had a very good experience with GR. I have done very well through GR.

Even paying the Platinum Subs I feel is very little per week, considering what I have out of it, between unlimited access to their records, tree sharing, the Boards etc.

I quite liked FMP. They have records GR don't but then GR have records that they don't have too.

I must admit Jem that I prefer Ancestry but at the end of the day I think it's what you are use too :-D

I find that FMP use a lot of transcripts but I like to sight the original documents..but that's just my personal opinion :-D :-D

Yes I like to see the original documents. Especially with the Census'. Sometimes you can have breakthrough finds by other people that are living in the street, etc.

Sometimes just by putting things into google you can get some great pieces of info :-)

LondonBelle Report 6 Jun 2015 10:02

At the end of the day transcripts are only as good as the people that transcribes them :-0 :-0

You are right Belle ;-)

Where transcripts and original images are available I have found that some transcripts are wrong :-0 :-0. This is why I'm always a bit dubious about info where there is only a transcript available and I can't sight the original document :-0 :-0

I have FMP too but they rely on a lot of transcripts only :-0 :-0

Do any of you happen to know whether you can search for yourself in a Register office?

I have a problem with my Great Grandmother as she was a lot older than my Great Grandfather and also lied about her age to make it look less of an age gap!

I believe I have identified her family correctly(from census and things my Gran used to say), but there are other candidates. Her deceased father's name is on the Marriage Certificate but it is quite a common name in that area.

If you send for a Certificate, all you will have is what you asked for .. if you know what I mean!
You can only know for sure if you compare details for others with same name!

As far as I recall Jem all that you get at the Registry Office is the Index you can't view the actual certificates :-(

Some Registry Offices you have to make an Appt so always best to give them call if you decide to make a visit :-)
