I saw a woman in Whitby last week park her car on a double yellow line, place a blue badge in the window, and RUN up the hill. Hmmm....

For many years, Irish registered cars in the Republic had to display both the road tax disc & insurance certificate.

Not sure if this is still so.

Where i live all the council car parks are free to blue badge holders, whether you are in a disabled bay or not; and of course you can park on double yellow lines as long as you are not causing an obstruction.

Have never found a car park where disbled blu badge holders park for free! You mat be lucky and get a disabled bay near to the shop etc., but where I live younstill have to pay for the privilege. The only places I do not have to pay are the large supermaket car parks.

And has anyone noticed the Homebase, irrespectivebof the size of store only ever seems to have 3 disabled and 3 mother and baby bays? Just not enough.

Rollo Dad didn't get the higher rate mobility as his legs seized up AFTER his 65th birthday therefore car tax remained payable.

Loved the blue badge especially when it saved me over £6 a time on the Severn Bridge.

Never mind a tax disc holder, I could do with a parking ticket holder. Last week we had a merry few minutes playing "chase the ticket" on Lindisfarne. The wind was blowing a right hooly and the ticket was of the non-stick variety. Every time I put it on the dashboard, before I had shut the door it had disappeared. Under the seat, in the back, everywhere. It gave us all a laugh though.

"I paid an exorbitant amount of car tax as the vehicle was old "

why ?

Any car including old ones can be used to claim tax exempt status when it is used solely for the benefit of the named person who need not be the owner of the car or even have a driving licence. The V5 will usually have a a named person as the keeper and they will be resp. for MoT & ins. The higher rate disabled mobility benefit will be paid to the disabled person and can be used for any purpose inc costs of running the vehicle.

It is often not realised by parking wardens et al that tax exempt cars need not have the disabled person in the car eg visit to hospital, collecting medicines and at these times the blue badge should not be displayed - and there is no right to a disabled space. At the same time parking is usually free in municipal/NHS car parks + some private.

However due to a royal cock up by DVLA when doing away with the car tax disk no provision was made for displaying tax exempt status. Various schemes have been devised by LocalGovt but DVLA refuses to fund them and so nothing happens. In order to avoid an endless stream of parking tickets-to-be-appealed the only option is to display the blue badge which does not of itself give any statutory right to free parking. So well and good but if the disabled person is not present then the blue badge could be forfeit. A real mess.

Elizabeth2469049 no I don't watch police interceptors. My daughter was driving her boyfriends car a couple of weeks ago when the police car behind her flagged her down. She was told there was no tax on the car. She was fined a hundred pound. Her boyfriend still has not lived it down. He had totally forgotten and was only late by 2 weeks. He went and taxed it straightaway.

Rollo my dad couldn't have a car as he was over 65 when his legs stopped working. As a result, I had to keep a car on the road which had a boot big enough to accommodate his wheelchair. I paid an exorbitant amount of car tax as the vehicle was old but it was all worth it to be able to give dad his trips out.

My tax disc holder now contains a poppy.

Motability cars are not free, you give up your mobility allowance and this is used to lease a car through the mobility scheme.

And you can only do this if awarded the highest rate of mobility allowance.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 13 Jun 2015 13:08

The mobility scheme giving free cars or cash is one of the things over which the axe is hovering. However given DC preference for the over 65s rather than families and kids this unfair and expensive scheme will probably endure. There is a draft regulation to tax it for higher rate payers but (a) most higher rate payers who qualify don't claim anyway (b) yield low for anything except total cancellation. It is a turkey for whom Christmas will come but not just yet.

The French abolished car tax and tax disks over 10 years ago. The tax was replaced by a few cents per litre on petrol administrative cost nil fines nil. Simples but too difficult for Osbourne.

Insurance sticker. must be on the windscreen.
