You are quite lucky he got any time at all - prison is expensive and whatever you may hear from the Home Office the reality is that imprisonment for "low level" crime is exceptional. He might have rubbed up the judge very badly as well as the arresting officers.

Where not to go for a night out in Cardiff ( why not go to Brissle ? )

Shoplifting is not an imprisonable offence - if the police bother with it at all the thieves just get a fixed penalty ticket as for , say, speeding but cheaper. A friend with a boutique lost a lot of stock to a "steamer" of shoplifters. She was able to chase them all the way down the Edgeware Road. They were nicked, taken to court where there was plenty of previous. Sentence? Discharge 'cos of assorted legal quibbles. Friend got most of her stock back but in a poor state.

well she got 50 hours unpaid work
£60 surcharge
A rehabilitation order and a community order

son's been following them on Facebook - they were engaged but she's now down as "single" and all mention of him from her is erased

his Facebook account has gone dead, so hopefully tomorrow or Tuesday we'll discover what he got

Hope your son and daughter-in-law get the justice they deserve and that they feel the sentences are appropriate. I hope the victims' statements are taken into account when deciding on a sentence.

The case is on http://www.thelawpages.com but there appear to be reporting restrictions, possibly due to defendant's age.
