I think people are afraid to get an interesting discussion going because they get too personal. Some posters can't seem to differentiate between opposing a point of view and attacking the poster. So most people, myself included, avoid posting anything controversial and the boards have become very bland.

This site has been slowly going down the pan for a few years now.

I think it is no coincidence that fewer new threads go up since GR added the very silly post/replies count. Who wants to know how many people are opening their thread but can't be arsed to add even 'hi' or an emoticon?
I see so many threads by 'independents' (ie not group threads) with high view counts and few or no replies. I find this so disheartening so just don't put up threads any more.
I don't idly open threads either.
Actually, I hardly ever look at GR these days :-)

AnninGlos Report 26 Jun 2015 12:32

It would help if the view count was only of full members, the way it is done we don't know how many of the views are by people who can't reply. I think it is done so they can say 'look at us we get lots of people reading the threads'. But I shall continue to come on here as long as it survives because I have people here who I consider friends. :-) :-)

Same here Ann. I have friends on here who I have been in contact with from the start of me joining. I am afraid I have no time whatsoever for FB for personal reasons.

The boards should be free - GRU are mistaken in requiring a sub. to post. Although old fashioned the board msg format is very much alive and kicking eg pistonheads most of whose members are not crinklies.

Web sites need a major revamp every year and def every two. Genes has had no proper revamp since the takeover unless you count the fiasco of the new tree format. My guess is that GRU is being left to die on the vine.

It would be perfectly viable as a member owned site after taking out the records ( which were not originally part of GRU ) but I guess that is unlikely to happen.

Shame.

I think maybe Facebook is the reason
we can say what I like on there
and keep in touch with the people
I am fond of and like
Facebook is so much more fun :-D :-D

I wouldn't single anyone out as a 'character' Young Master Piers ;-) it's horses for courses really and I believe everyone has value.
However, I did miss Julia when she 'left' as we had a great pm friendship. I even got her hooked on crochet again.

GawdLuvUs Rollo, don't even suggest a revamp. Do you want 'chat' to be full of complaints??? A lot of members can't cope with changes to websites and I think it is to GRs credit to leave the site that way. By the way.......reunited is one word :-)

edit. I agree about FB Joy :-D You can make mhardy harses disappear as well ;-) :-D

Genes certainly started losing members and going slower right back when facebook first came on the scene. I do feel there is a place for both though. I use facebook as it keeps me in touch with family. However some people are not comfortable with it and sometimes I get aggravated with it too when all you see are photos, 'feel good' posters and quizzes. I will stay on Genes to keep in contact with those who have no wish to go on facebook. :-) :-)

SylviaInCanada Report 27 Jun 2015 04:51

I questioned GR about something over on FB a few weeks ago, and was told that they were "doing a study as to where GR should be going"

Estelle and Phil Moir have been moved over to FMP, allegedly "unwilling" according to rumour from people who talked to them at WDYTYA

I've said for years that they are trying to drive GR into the ground ........... despite having promised the Competitions Board that they would maintain all 3 sites that they own as independent entities.

I'm expecting to see GR shrink back to what ti used to around the time that I joined, ie, 2004 ............ the Boards and tree building programme. The only question might be ........... how much they would charge or would it be free.

I have only ever used this board apart from about two ventures on to other boards.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 27 Jun 2015 12:49

Talking about the number of views versus the number of posts, It did occur to me that a lot of the viewers not posting could be paid members who venture away from their usual boards - Military, find ancestors etc.

The GR boards have been sliding down the pan for years.

The beginning of the end was years ago when the boards were made member only after incidents prompted it. The board went from fast moving to pensioner speed.

The final straw was when FB came along & gave us opportunity to converse using a far better platform.

The only thing to speed up the board is a hoo har, but that is rare nowadays as the Wums (remember them!) cant be bothered/gone elsewhere.

Sadly the boards have lost their spark :-(

Sharron

nameslessone Report 27 Jun 2015 13:53

Confession time for me.

I like to look at the threads but only post when I've got something to say. However I usually read them 'not signed in' - I started doing that when things were angry on here and it stopped me having a rant. But I'm not sure I believe that I add to the count this way.

Sylvia - If Genes are doing a study - shouldn't they be asking the views of the members? Oh - I forgot - they only know of members via Facebook ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-)
