I expected a few glitches even smoke billowing from my PC I decided to leave it off yesterday till the initial batch of downloading was done.
Switched on and stood well back till a pop up told me it was ready, closed my eyes and pushed the button!
Lots of activity for a while about an hour I guess and bingo it works!
:-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

So what's different about it?

I've been testing the beta for some time and reckon it is pretty good.

I put one copy on a dual boot machine and not really had any major problems - pretty fast too although I was running it on a high spec machine.

On first glance not a lot!
It now finds pictures from anywhere on your machine and displays them in year order, handy if like me you have searched all over for that photo that got saved in an odd folder by mistake.
They say the start button is back but it never went away on 8.1 right click the bottom left icon and the shut-down option is there now you left click and get a power button to give shut down. :-S
The start menu is on the same button like XP which makes finding things simpler, the have a new browser Microsoft Edge to replace Explorer and if you feel inclined your computer can talk to you, hoping they might upgrade it to fully working version of "seven of nine" then I might use it!

Guinevere, are you on Windows 7? I think they might be upgrading Windows 8 first. We have one machine running on 7 and one on 8 and the one with Windows 8 has been upgraded to 10 but we are still waiting for the one running Windows 7.

OH seems happy enough with 10 and says he thinks it's an improvement.

I'm on windows 8 on both computers.

I hope I can upgrade soon.

I am on Windows 8 and haven't been given the upgrade yet. OH is on 7 and got it this morning but after 6 hour it was still "working on it". From Googling it seems to be a problem some people have had.

Mayfield - "Resistence is futile!" :-D

I'm still trying to get used to Windows 8.1 on my laptop. I have Windows 7 on my desktop; and that's much easier to use. And they call that progress, :-S

I understand - I think from Computeractive magazine - that it was being given first to those who had used the beta, and then to those who clicked that little white icon at right-hand bottom to opt to take it up, and then the rest (that icon has since disappeared).

I have received it this morning. Seems OK.

OH's PC is now updated. I had to stop the original "working on it" task and select windows update from the start menu.

Make sure your security is compatible and up dated before you installl 10,,,,,not all Kaspersky versions are.

Mayfield

Mayfield Report 31 Jul 2015 09:19

As Kay says some security may have issues. Norton is not yet compatible with the new Edge browser they are advising you use Firefox or another supported browser for the time being.

Stella - you were able to upgrade to 10 from Vista?

I would recommend running it as a dual boot so that you can return easily to your existing Win 7, 8, 8.1 if you have problems.

Also, remember to back up absolutely everything if installing a new OS.

You can download the Windows 10 ISO from here (free):

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO

Installation will of course need a key.

VISTA users will have top do a clean install and are NOT eligible for the free upgrade which applies to Win7, Win 8.x only. If the machine ran VISTA it will for sure run Win10 which is much more efficient. Major gotcha to watch out for is unsigned drivers.

So far I have had mixed success dual booting with linux but it is running OK in a VM where I can keep it under control.

Win10 would have been real whizz two or three years ago and is what Win8 should have been. Now though how relevant is it ?

Corporations and biz users are clinging limpet like to Win7 and will not rush in to say the least.

Among users of high end kit gamers are not going to be much interested as it will throw up no end of hitches. Graphics designers for the most part prefer their Macs. Serious CAD designers don't do Windows though small shops using AutoCad might UG.

Retail is moving away from the desktop/laptop onto apps focused on smart phones and smart tvs. Older TVs can be made smart using stuff such as ChromeCast and Amazon Fire.

That is why the UG is free even Microsoft can feel that disruptive change is happening and the 30 year reign of the desktop PC is drawing to a close. What Microsoft need is for Win10 in mobile devices to catch light and even better for smart TV makers to use Win10 rather than Android. They are a very, very long way behind the curve thanks to Steve Bullmer.

For users of Win10 the quest has led Microsoft to seriously strip down the OS to essentials and improve efficiency and security. The reslt is that it will run real fast and most anything made since 2005 with a noticable speed up. Even the browser is better though IE is still lurking should you need it.

I now have a "Get Windows 10" icon / button on my laptop- a Windows 7 one.

I am not very computer literate and not too good with change in general! :-S

Will I be sorry if I press the button? :-0 :-0 :-0
