Keith...It may help if you use the Find Ancestors board as opposed to General Chat many members like myself probably rarely visit this board..that being said your William was still alive 1891 see below..living with him was Son William John (b Ireland abt 1835-9...which would follow your thoughts on the marriage of Wm and Sarah taking place in Ireland..Wmj is also a widower but two of his sons are living with him.....The family do not seem to have moved from the same area all their time in Cumberland...

If you can locate Wm J.Ray on 1901/1911 census it may help find his actual place of Birth.

Irish ancestors are really difficult to trace unless you have quite specific information. I came to a halt on two lines of my husband's family because he had Irish ancestors with common Irish names and the only place of birth I could find was just Ireland. I do go back and look again every so often in case new records have been made public but no joy so far.

I wish you luck.

Keith, it may not be related but on the 1851 census image, several lines above the entry for William and Sarah ( just gives Ireland as POB) There is a George Ray also born Ireland but gives the place as Inch. there is an Inch in Kerry and also Clare and Cork ( there may well be others).

You could (if you have a lot of time) search the parish records at the NLI

http://registers.nli.ie/

they are not indexed though, and not complete, but may may be worth a try.

Sorry I have not replied sooner! Having taken on board some of the advise offered above I have taken the following action:
1) I rechecked the 1851/1841 Census and found them to show that both William (born 1810) and Sarah Ray(born1815) were living at Talentire in Cumberland, they were married and origanated in Ireland.
2) As far as I can tell they were both protistants (all of my familys ancestery points to this)
3) As these Census forms were very basic the only other information they showed was their ocupations.
4) I again am assuming that they were married in Ireland as I cannot find any marriage or church records relation to them in Cumberland.

My question now is what is the best way to move forward?
Is there a spesific Irish Website I should be looking at?
I am open to any surgestions!

Thank you,

Keith

Keith

If your Irish ancestors come from Co Mayo I may be able to look up Birth /Marriage as I have a month sub. to records at the moment.

A lot depends if his ancestors were from the six counties or the south and when they came over the water. Did they spend any time in Scotland? For Ulstermen that was very common and quite a few people who believe they had Irish ancestors were actually Scotsmen who had moved to Ireland. The English themselves did much the same 'cos of work available in Belfast.

As always it is best to work backwards. You should be able to find UK census records which will give a rough date of birth and, if you are lucky, place of birth rather than just "Ireland". Any death record will have an age with an accuracy of 5 years or better and that is a help.

Once you have the oldest UK records you can decide on yr strategy for Ireland. Knowing their religion ( Catholic, COfI, Preby. Lutheran etc ) and some Irish history also helps.

It is almost stone cold certain that some of your ancestors went from Ireland to the USA and you can often work out a lot from the US census and immigration records.

Ancestry and the various free Irish web sites are the best place to search once you have a starting point.

good luck you will need it
