OK, I know there is a thread somewhere but search is not working and I can't find it manually.

My OH started the process yesterday (I have not yet been invited thank goodness), he is to be our guineapig. He is very PC literate but got thrown by being asked for either a microsoft or MSN password (he couldn't remember which ) he has neither, or has forgotten he ever did have. Anyway, he gave up last night and when he switched on this morning his pc froze. He has given up for now. Which password are they asking for, is there any way of getting round it and what happens if he has forgotten it or never had one? Rollo, Erroll any advice please?

If I don't answer it will be because we are out this morning. Thanks in advance.

You cannot install Windows 10 ( or several other Microsoft products ) without a Microsoft e-mail account. What was once msn and so on is now outlook.com. So just trot along to
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-com/
and set up an account (free). That can then be used to setup windows 10 etc.

BE WARNED!!!
The T&C attached to Microsoft email accounts are even more draconian than Google and leave you with even less privacy and control. Thus think twice before using MS email as a regular email address. Windows/Office do nothing to make using alternatives easy.

The ISO images of various versions of Windows10 can be downloaded ( ree ) from Microsoft. I recommended to do this and create a bootable install DVD with it. If and when (likely) you need a rescue disk or want to make a change or carry out a fresh installation you will be glad you did.

It is possible to UG to Windows 10 using a brand new hard drive but the process is a bit fiddly and not supported by MS. OTOH it avoids having a lot of baggage from the old installation. Google and you will soon find a how to.

good luck

Is this the one?

yes

btw Cortana may send any or all of its data back to MS HQ "so as to improve its effectiveness". That content can also be used by M$ in any way it chooses and given to third parties along with yr email etc. (T&C)

"resistance is futile"

Thank you Rollo. I think he eventually remembered his (very old and unused) MSN password.

Isn't it odd how apparently everybody in Redmond seems to have a heavy accent and a poor command of the English language?

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 11 Aug 2015 16:07

yeah, they employ people with odd sounding names such as Satya Narayana Nadella, what do you expect ?

It must be some sort of company policy

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 11 Aug 2015 16:23

Can't I just give them my full bank details, date of birth, mother's maiden name etc?

Oh, and the keys to my car.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 11 Aug 2015 16:31

if you are driving a decent motor (a) it won't have any keys and (b) the Russian mafia, Serbs et al will already have yr details. You are about to become a none person with no ID.

It could be argued that I do not necessarily need the mafia for that !

To return to the original subject :-D

Is there any way that once upgraded you can do away with having a password required?

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 11 Aug 2015 16:46

Do you mean disable the screen where you log in?

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 11 Aug 2015 16:50

When we log in our current computers we don't have to input a password. Now that OH has upgraded he always has to input a password when he logs in.

Sooner or later a software contractor at UKJGov is going to invoke the wrong routine and delete the digital identity of most of the population ... can't happen ? A US contractor has already managed to leak the whole US Fed employee database by accident ( sounds better than "hacked" ).

UK and other digital IDs / logins / credit card / NHS / DVLC details are hawked around the internet for anything from a few dollars to quite a lot. All of the more serious immigrants take advantage and fly into Heathrow 1st class rather than mucking about at Calais. The Border Agency are like the Keystone Cops trying to catch Goldfinger.

Getting back to Windows 10 it is meaner and leaner and has better security than what went before but then so it has always been with new Windows releases. What bothers me are the many entry points for Microsoft to "monitor" the system not to mention Homeland Security, CIA, NSA and GCHQ. The likes of Russian organised crime, the Chinese Army, Desh, Savak, Mossad and so on are deemed too thick to work out how to hijack these entry points and use them for their own ends.

All in all closed code is one of those really bad ideas which one day will bite hard and everybody will wonder at the stupidity of it all.

Shudders.

Start menu window,
right click at the Win logo
select Run option
in the Run box type netplwiz
OK
follow the prompts.
Restart Win 10.

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 11 Aug 2015 16:56

You can turn that off if nobody else uses the computer although it lessens security of course

When you do as Rollo correctly says above, click on your account and I think you can remove the tick next to something about users having to enter a password - will double check when I am on a Win 10 machine later.
