Isn't it odd how apparently everybody in Redmond seems to have a heavy accent and a poor command of the English language?

Thank you Rollo. I think he eventually remembered his (very old and unused) MSN password.

yes

btw Cortana may send any or all of its data back to MS HQ "so as to improve its effectiveness". That content can also be used by M$ in any way it chooses and given to third parties along with yr email etc. (T&C)

"resistance is futile"

You cannot install Windows 10 ( or several other Microsoft products ) without a Microsoft e-mail account. What was once msn and so on is now outlook.com. So just trot along to
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-com/
and set up an account (free). That can then be used to setup windows 10 etc.

BE WARNED!!!
The T&C attached to Microsoft email accounts are even more draconian than Google and leave you with even less privacy and control. Thus think twice before using MS email as a regular email address. Windows/Office do nothing to make using alternatives easy.

The ISO images of various versions of Windows10 can be downloaded ( ree ) from Microsoft. I recommended to do this and create a bootable install DVD with it. If and when (likely) you need a rescue disk or want to make a change or carry out a fresh installation you will be glad you did.

It is possible to UG to Windows 10 using a brand new hard drive but the process is a bit fiddly and not supported by MS. OTOH it avoids having a lot of baggage from the old installation. Google and you will soon find a how to.

good luck

OK, I know there is a thread somewhere but search is not working and I can't find it manually.

My OH started the process yesterday (I have not yet been invited thank goodness), he is to be our guineapig. He is very PC literate but got thrown by being asked for either a microsoft or MSN password (he couldn't remember which ) he has neither, or has forgotten he ever did have. Anyway, he gave up last night and when he switched on this morning his pc froze. He has given up for now. Which password are they asking for, is there any way of getting round it and what happens if he has forgotten it or never had one? Rollo, Erroll any advice please?

If I don't answer it will be because we are out this morning. Thanks in advance.
