Men who abuse Asian girls should receive harsher sentences than those who abuse British girls, on the grounds that Asian girls suffer more because of the shame etc. Discuss.

Abuse is abuse, regardless of the victims ethnicity.

BULL CRAP men who abuse any female should be treated with the hands of the tender loving mothers ... STUPID debate

I believe that a judge suggested this, what a wally

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 18 Sep 2015 20:48

yep .........

......... it was suggested by a judge, reported in the MailOnLine about 2 days ago

In fact, I think he gave a harsher sentence to accused men, with the above explanation.

It perhaps should be noted that this was an appeal, against the sentence given originally by a female judge, the judges upheld that sentence.

"The judge who jailed him, Sally Cahill QC, specifically said that the fact the victims were Asian had been factored in as an 'aggravating feature' when passing sentence.
She stated that the victims and their families had suffered particular 'shame' in their communities because of what had happened to them.
Additionally there were cultural concerns that the girls' future prospects of being regarded as a good catch for arranged marriages might be damaged."

"The argument that Ul Nasir was given a longer sentence due to his own 'ethnic and religious origin' was based on 'a misconception', he added.
'The judge who tried the case was in the best position to determine the correct sentence.'

Mr Justice Walker, sitting with Lord Justice Laws and Mr Justice Mitting, at London's Royal Courts of Justice,, concluded: 'There is no basis for saying that Judge Cahill adopted an incorrect starting point. This application for leave to appeal against sentence must be refused.'

Goes without saying that "Asian girls" can of course also be "British girls",

imo the sentences should be as tough ( and that is very tough) whoever is the victim, whether they were born here or not.

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 18 Sep 2015 21:40

well that's the parents

Guinevere Report 18 Sep 2015 21:45

The judge was Sally Cahill, not exactly an Asian name. And the one who upheld the sentence was Justice Walker, I don't think he's Asian either. Rose has already given the names.

Of course assault is assault. The Mail isn't known for its accuracy in reporting and I'm wondering if the judge said that as an Asian man the guilty man would have known how the community would have viewed it and thus he deserved a heavy sentence.

Not sure why Bobtanian raised the subject of FGM.

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 18 Sep 2015 22:01

don't you think that THAT is abuse? or don't you know what it entails........?

Denburybob

Denburybob Report 18 Sep 2015 22:03

This was not my view. It was something I read in the paper, (not the Mail) and actually disagree with. I think most sentences for assault on girls are far too light, whatever their ethnicity.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 18 Sep 2015 22:03

The discussion was about Asian girls being abused.

FGM is almost entirely inflicted on girls of African origin. Hence I see no connection.

Barbra Report 18 Sep 2015 22:06

Agree Bob .to little to late sometimes .I would chop um off .not allowed to say what just upsets me .they wouldn't do it again

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 18 Sep 2015 22:07

Ok I've slightly gone off topic.......

so that is not abuse then? rather that a religious ritual?

you appear in this topic,to be concentrating of the male abuser rather than ANY abuser......

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 18 Sep 2015 22:11

Of course it's abuse. Stupid question.

The thread was about a specific case involving an Asian man abusing Asian girls.
