The law has been seen as a protector of individual rights in this part of the modern world.

Occasionally, laws are misunderstood & therefore misapplied. Nevertheless, the law must be fair & practical. It must respect the person regardless of any pomp or privilege they may or may not enjoy in society. And it is vital that justice is administered in some form, evenly & fairly for all.

If you read the link I posted it says it's to keep them virgins until marriage and faithful after marriage. It also makes sex more pleasurable for men, apparently.

Although this thread seems to have wandered off a bit, can I stick my two-penn'orth in? I may be wrong, but I think that FGM prevents women getting any pleasure from sex. Could it be that men like their women like that so that they, (men) don't have to put any effort in to sex. Wham bam thankyou ma'am, and that is it? Only a theory of course.

My view would be if you don't want a wife as nature made her stay single!

Paedophiles don't think they'll get caught. They focus on what they can find or get access to.

So if there are different sentences according to which girls they abuse, which girls will paedophiles focus on in the future? It doesn't take much working out does it? You end up with a bigger deterent for abusing Asian girls than for abusing British girls. Gives out all the wrong messages.

FGM predates Islam. It was a cultural practice before Islam was introduced. In parts of Africa Christians practice it as well.

It's a crime in Egypt but it's estimated that over 90% of Egyptian women have been subjected to this practice.

FGM is still practised in Asian communities as well as African. It appears to be a mainly Muslim practise although if I´m wrong, I stand corrected.

The women can't stop doing it. In that culture it is important for fathers to get their daughters married off so they stop being a drain on their resources. Men only want wives who have been "cut".

So fathers make their wives afflict FGM on their daughters. If they say no they get seven bells beaten out of them and the fathers get the grandmothers to do it. If they say no they get beaten as well.

It isn't that simple as the women saying no.
