So pleased for you Polly, it will be a great feeling.
I can smell, but not taste anything since I had ear surgery last May.
I now have a damaged nerve and am waiting for the day I find I can taste again.

Ann that's exactly what I was doing, but it's not the same.

my Dad lost his sense of taste and smell when he suffered a fractured skull after being hit by a miotorbike - he never regained either but carried on eating the things he liked by remembering the taste and smell

You have missed the smell of harvest for this year but there will be ploughing. I can't imagine not being able to smell those.

OH, who comes from Tottenham, thinks I am mad when I wind the window of the car down to get a sniff of the combine.

Wonderful Polly, we never appreciate what we have until we lose it. :-)

Polly, this happened tome, too. A few years ago, I gradually lost my sense of smell and taste until they were non-existent. My doctor gave me a steroid nasal spray, but it made no difference, and like you, I was told I'd have to live with it.

A couple of years later, I had a bad chest infection, and was given a steroid inhaler for my chest. This had the strange side effect of restoring my sense of smell and taste!
Now, if my sense of smell deteriorates again, I use the inhaler for a day or so to bring it back again!

I agree, it really was amazing when it came back, and I was going round smelling everything for the pure pleasure of it!

Sharron I had forgotten just how much I was missing. I love perfume and still used it, I would have to ask OH if it was okay. Just little everyday things I am re-discovering, we went into Waterstones on Wednesday, I just stood smelling the books. I

I really must get a life.

I thought I would share this with you.

Some time ago ( two years or so) I mentioned on GR that I had suddenly lost my sense of smell which then resulted in me partially losing my sense of taste. I spoke to my doctor, who said that there was not anything causing this, just to try to accept it, and it may come back. I occasionally found it bothersome but nothing to cause me real concern. On occasions I have not smelled the potato saucepan boiling dry, toast burned to a cinder, being alerted by the smoke alarm when I had left something on the cooker etc. Fast forward now to about eight weeks ago, when I started to notice I was beginning to taste my food again which was so nice just to be able to identify what I was eating by taste. It was s good not having to ask my OH if it tasted okay. A month ago we went to Sunday lunch at my sons house, whilst we were sitting chatting I suddenly became aware that I could smell the roast beef cooking, it took me a few seconds to realise what was happening. Slowly I have rediscovered my sense of smell little by little. I have just polished the dining-room table and could smell the polish, walking into the hall I discovered that the Pot Pourri that I top up regularly had a smell. Its like a whole new world opening up for me.

I think I my senses are functioning once more. :-D :-D
