My mother used to make it with suet in a white cloth bag. Nowadays at hotels, it's nothing like that, and it is invariably a like an ordinary pudding and served with custard.

Happy days

I once holidayed in The Isle of Wight, the Hotel we stayed in called this suet pudding. "Stand up Dick". the old ladies in our group had a great time asking for more. ;-)

I wrap it securely in several layers of tin foil and leave in the slow cooker for six/eight hours. It's a show stopper ;-)

There is a suet one in my steamer at this very moment.

SUET not sponge, my mum used to make brilliant spotted dick and jam roly poly.

Never attempted to make either as I knew I would be disappointed if it wasn't as good as mum's.

OH has dared to argue with me over this matter. How dare he?

As far as I am concerned, a spotted dick is a suet pudding with raisins or, preferably, sultanas in it.It is steamed and eaten with custard.

He, and what does he know, thinks it is a steamed sponge with fruit in it.

What do you think?
