I think I should try to remove the sarcasm from my voice when I get cold callers. Just had one (Out of Area - so no number to report) from an 'Accident Compensation' firm, about an accident I have had in the past 3 years.
Me: 'What sort of accident'?
Him: 'A vehicle accident'
Me: 'What sort of vehicle?'
Then he put the phone down before I could ask him to take me off the list, as I don't drive. This isn't the first time cold callers have had the nerve to hang up on me !!
:-P

I have been known to ride a child's scooter in the local neighbourhood - hence my asking what sort of vehicle :-D

(That was going to be my 'admission' to a possible accident) :-D :-D :-D

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 2 Dec 2015 18:48

I am getting peed of with Sky

We had telewest yonks ago before virgin media took it over .the account was in hubbies name had the full package with phone and broadband

Yonks ago we decided that sky offered more for the tele so I took out a subs to them and we have the hd box in my name

I rang them on the 9th Nov saying I want to cancel as can't afford to pay it now that hubby has passed away . No problem we will close the account on 9th Dec

Bloody people though they keep ringing me . I recognize the tel nos so ignore the ringing but a couple of times I have answered because the extension doesn't have caller display . Give em short shift when they ask to speak to .mrs T i tell em no and put the phone down

Why can't they be mindful of peoples circumstances .surely telling them that some one has suffered a bereavement would get some sort of sorry to bother you response, and to mark up the account with don't contact

Today I had a tvio box installed from virgin media so it's tv. Phone and broadband back again with the same provider

I've enjoyed the accident calls.

I've done the OMG are they all right and ignoring what they are saying in my panic :-D

I've asked them which car it was as there are several to choose from ( only have one)

and I've asked which of the many drives had the accident (there is only the one).

I think I must be due for another call soon - might suggest they start saving money to pay the fines coming their way :-D :-D

Andysmum Report 3 Dec 2015 12:16

Most of mine are automated so I can't string them along!!

At the moment they are all about upgrading my boiler and saving more than I spend on gas!! We don't have mains gas. :-S :-S :-S :-S

Fly, tell them you haven't got a computer. If they insist you have, just inform them you threw it out because you're fed up with their calls :-D

My daughter used to work in a maternity unit. One day, she had to phone for a neonatal specialist, and was waiting for the call back, telling her how long he'd be.
The phone rang - it was a real (as opposed to recorded) PPI cold caller!
She explained, as calmly as she could that they had called an emergency phone in a neo-natal unit, could they remove the number - and the plank didn't believe her......
Then the air turned blue :-|

Andysmum, are you on TPS? This is free, and supported by Ofcom.
If you are, you can report them, if they have a number, or if you can get the name of the firm out of them.
Since September, quite a few companies have been fined - some of whom are firms selling equipment to stop cold callers

Maggie, I've tried TPS but it's only for a short time and then you have to do it again!

These boiler upgrading calls are supposedly on behalf of the Scottish Government as part of their contribution to reducing global warming. I tried pressing the more info button once, but they wouldn't say who they were or tell me anything except how to get a new gas boiler!!

So now I just put the phone down!

Joy, who or what is/are Mugiebar??

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 3 Dec 2015 15:33

Unfortunately some of the Uk callers try to get around TPS rules by claiming that they are not actually selling anything. :-0

With out computer friends I often tell them I have never bought a computer. Which is true, but they don't need to know I've been with OH when they have and then I've driven them home. Sometimes I'm believed. One kept insisting that that someone in the house was using a computer, so I go into a panic, obviously, claiming there is no one in the house and they need to tell me who it is --- don't usually get any help - I wonder if they think I am lying ;-)

I had a nuisance call a couple of weeks ago, and after I had cut it off, about 30 seconds later the phone rang again. WHAT NOW? I shouted. A polite voice asked for me by name, and introduced himself as an officer from the Met Police. Oh dear. He was only checking up on a reference I had given someone for the renewal of his shotgun cert fortunately.

Namelessone, I've started denying I'm me, and demanding to know what company they're representing, failing that, the company they work for, before I will bother MaggieW. They don't like you asking them that!!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Dec 2015 21:35

For 47 years, I have asked "who, and why" when some unknown person phones and asks for OH

That started in the first year we were over here, when students would phone in the night before an exam to ask for help, or after to find out their mark .............. yep, at midnight, 1 am, etc etc.

4 am in the morning after an exam in the previous afternoon was the worst call

I was cold and calculating to those callers!

"He has office hours from 8 am to 4 pm from Monday to Friday. Contact him there"

If OH wanted a student or a member of the rugby team to call home, he always warned them to ask either for Doc or for him by his Christian name, and warned them of the reaction from me if I heard "Dr xxxxxx".

Only 1 member of a rugby team ever made the mistake in about 10 years ............... a big husky back. He later told me he had never heard anyone's voice change so fast from friendly to cold. I think the message got through to all the rest.

I've continued to answer the phone in the same way even when OH is in the same room .............. and maggie's correct. These cold callers do not like being asked who and why before I will pass the phone over.

They also don't like being told there is no-one of that name living here, and that they should learn how to correctly pronounce people's names

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 4 Dec 2015 08:51

I usually find they aren't bothered if you claim not to be the person they've named. They will just carry on speaking to you.

I once had a right old go at someone who assumed I was my OH!

I've tried the what company question, but I can never understand the answer :-S

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 4 Dec 2015 11:40

I just had a cold call, ('out of area' number) apparently from 'Access for all', I asked her to repeat the name - and she put the phone down!! :-D
