Have just ordered a copy of latest album and a couple from the back catalogue. Went for vinyl rather than CD.

I can't get it around my head that he's gone :-(
The man was a legend, an Icon.
I saw him live in 1987 Glass Spider tour at Wembley & 1990 Sound & Vision tour in Milton Keynes. I loved his music, loved the man.

He will be missed, but remembered for years to come.

I see there is a petition to rename Mars to David Bowie.

Rest in peace, David Jones; memories of Bromley Tech days before Bowie.

Major Tom was running round my head all night :-0

He gave us so much. I don't begrudge such an extraordinary talent the well deserved "fuss".

May David Bowie rest in peace.

Lovely story, Maggie.

I only ever saw him from a distance, the other side of the floodlights.

A hero, and, in real life, a true gentleman. <3

I 'met' him once. Rather, he sent me flying - to the floor!!
I was having one of my night time strolls, (something I'd done since the age of 12)and was behind the Mayflower in Southampton. As I walked past a coach, in one movement, the door opened and this guy jumped out and whacked into me, sending me slapping into the tarmac.

It was David Bowie in his Ziggy Stardust! gear!!

He was soooo apologetic. Picked me up, Made sure I was okay etc.
I realised who it was, but, being slightly embarrassed, a moody teenager and in 'walking mode', I just said 'That's alright' and strolled off!
He shouted 'Are you sure you're okay' as I disappeared around the corner as fast as I could!!

My knee hurt!

Elvis 1977, Lennon 1980, Mercury 1991..the tv , the radio, the press all devoted hours of coverage, because these were people like Bowie who were creators of something that would last way past their life times, and mine.

"The sniper in the brain"...jeez I wish I'd written anything half as good as that one line .

"Time" (worth listening to for Mick Ronson alone) warning some words might shock
:-D ;-)

The news programmes give the public what they want.

Remember the air time given to Diana's death?

A substantial number of viewers are watching for the Bowie coverage so that's what is being broadcast. I got bored with the coverage of Diana but that's what others wanted. So I had to lump it. :-D

Sad, loved some of his music but absolutely enthralled by the film Labrynth as were my children.

Re the wall to wall coverage.....he does deserve it IMO.

No other artist was such a chameleon and there will never be another who would come close.

Sad news, as is whenever anyone passes away.

I must say, though that his music was never my cup of tea and I do think the media air time is way too much.

As Guinevere says there is a lot more to David Bowie than his hit songs. He was one of the most influential people in the development of media over his lifetime, an influence that will not fade away after the next few days of saturated retro. BTW the new album is terrific.

Very sad news.

1972

for those of us of a certain age who can probably still sing along to all his songs from the 70's and later, or just for myself.

I won't say RIP, people who have contributed so much never really die do they?

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 11 Jan 2016 11:55

He wasn't just a pop star. He was one of the most influential artists of his generation. He also was an acclaimed actor.

Worth a lot more air time than reality TV ****. Or sporting speculations.

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 11 Jan 2016 11:55

more than likely Phyll - I know little of David Bowie but obviously he had a great following

However, BBC news this morning was just about him and nothing else

Phyll

Phyll Report 11 Jan 2016 11:36

Always sad when a person dies, but such a fuss when it's a pop star! I suppose we will be inundated with his music for some time to come.

I agree Det OTT- Radio 4 news was full of it, even to the extent of asking "invited guests" The Archbishop of Canterbury and Mr Corbin to comment !

That's all the main news channels are talking about. However sad for his family and genuine friends, it's an awful lot of air time.
