Some of the states that were hit with heavy snowfalls do not normally get more than a few cms, if that ............. so they don't have the equipment to clear the roads, and people just don't know how to survive.

Our newscasts showed hundreds of cars that had been stuck on a couple of turnpikes by the snow .......... one of the turnpikes had been blocked for 13 hours, the other for more than 16. One driver was complaining because no-one had provided a service station fro the drivers :-S

Turnpike = M1

Here in Canada AND in the northern US states, you would not leave for a drive of longer than 50 miles in winter without making sure that you had emergency equipment in the car ............. a shovel or spade, blanket, extra warm clothing, candles, water, food, etc. That can be important even within range of major cities, because blizzards and high winds can block roads.

I well remember the winters of 1947 and 1962 ............ I was at uni in Liverpool in 1962, and the freeze lasted for a couple of months. Side roads had frozen ruts and piles of snow that you had to clamber over.

We also lived on the edge of the Pennines, and most winters there would be at least one morning when Dad would open the front door to find snow half-up it, and he would have to dig his way out down the long front path.

O.h. spoke to his son in N.Y. last evening and he said they had had no blizzards, so maybe some areas were lucky. He is in Germantown.

I hate cold weather, ho pe spring will soon be on it's way lol
