I am seriously thinking of signing up for Facebook - I feel I am missing out on a lot of things I can only reach on Facebook. But I do also read a lot of cautionary tales, including the ones on a very recent thread. |

Goodness knows! Ask your daughter to help you and lock it up as tight as she can. |

I have two e-mail accounts. The first one I ever had was a nickname, which I use for Facebook (and a few other things) |

I have found more advantages than disadvantages in using FB. I like its facilities. |

You'll have the option to tick or untick who can see your posts, everyone, just friends or just yourself! |

Thanks to you all - I'll get daughter to read this thread before I take any action. Emma - it is exactly this "privacy" idea that makes me cautious. I have no wish to fill it up with day to day personal trivia, but might be happy to get in touch with long lost friends. How much do I give away if I follow the Facebook pages of organisations (eg GR!) I appreciate Rollo's comment that Facebook knows all about me anyway, as I find Google does! |

Facebook may know more about you than you'd think, but there is no reason why you can't adopt a non de plume. |

For some reason, Arthur Uther Pendragon (AKA Druid King of Britain) has had his Facebook Page blocked because some nerd has decided it isn't his real name!! |

My daughters and I regularly chat privately on FB, through 'messages', as do my grand daughter and I :-D |

FB keep your ip address(es) in their logs so they are perfectly well aware which real names match up to nicknames and other aliases. As that does nothing to stop them selling targetted ads they are not bothered. OTOH they are quite willing to give the sign-on lists inc "secrets" to the boys in blue which has come as a bit of a shock to some. |

Well, talking about bringing up children, meeting up and the vagaries of the English language are hardly likely to bring the 'boys in blue' to our doorstep are they? |

I was reluctant to join FB at first but was coerced into it by Fanny by Gaslight whom some of you may remember from on here. She chose my name for me - my middle name and maiden name translated into Welsh. :-D |

It isn't the fault of Facebook, or any other social media site, when people give away so much information about themselves - often without realising. |

Morning Island - hope you're well. The trouble with FB is that they sometimes take it upon themselves to add info to your profile that you've hidden. Makes me mad!! They also invite contacts you have to be your friend, which maddens me even more!! :-| |
