I love Facebook, if anyone wants to add me, please pm me for my name. I love putting names to faces and usually pop in most days when not busy or up my tree :-D

I seriously think that the old phrase "buyer beware" should be adapted to "user beware" when it comes to FB

Use it

Enjoy it

But be aware of what it means to use it, and of all the dangers.

I do ue my real name on FB and thanks being the only one of me have been found by many long lost contacts from all over the world and across generations

they can request to friend and until you accept request they can't access your postings

even then you can choose who can access what

and you can arrange people in groups ;;;ie frriends relatives workmates so only post to 1 group at a time ..thou usually once something is posted anybody can repost it to who they like ..I think ???

I had to learnt to adapt my privacy tho

I'm 'friends' with my 13 year old grand daughter on FB.
I suppose we (by that I mean the people I'm friends with, and other members of my family's friends) don't really post anything contentious (to us) on FB. Some people may be offended at talk of miscarriage, breastfeeding, body 'bits' - but none of our 'lot' are.
No-one ever posts naked pics, or is downright crude.
We never have 'slanging' matches, everyone's free to join in, and we just tend to have a laugh. Some of the posts may be a little rude, but at 13 - she's heard most of the words, and has been known to explain a joke to a lovely lady who's 75 going on 30!!
Perhaps this is because our 'friends' on facebook are that - friends, not just random people met online.

My younger daughter and my nephew's wife were due to have their first babies within months of each other - they regularly posted (and still post) any worries etc
We all pitched in to reassure them, especially my eldest - who works in maternity!! :-)

I was surprised (although I shouldn't have been) when looking at pictures of 'people you might know' last night to see my 13 year old Granddaughter looking back at me. He mum has always been anti FB so I am wondering if she knows. Thinking about it, it is unlikely that she doesn't. I didn't click friend request! :-D

Were you referring to the 'people you might know' Wend?

I ignore that - unless I'm feeling nosey :-D It is amazing what some people have on show to the general hoi poloi :-D

Wend

Wend Report 18 Feb 2016 20:31

Thanks Island :-D

I'll add to that the constant daily reminders of what I was doing 3 or whenever years ago. Yes I know, I don't need reminding and nor does anyone else thanks very much :-|

I just delete them :-P

Island

Island Report 18 Feb 2016 19:04

Hi Wend, I'm fine thanks. I've just sent you a pm.

Something I find tiresome about FB is the relatively recent (to me) 'suggested sites' in my newsfeed and why when I click on 'why am I seeing this?' nobody tells me! :-S The only useful option is to hide it - no sign of a 'I don't want your carppy suggestions' option :-|

Wend Report 18 Feb 2016 11:21

Morning Island - hope you're well. The trouble with FB is that they sometimes take it upon themselves to add info to your profile that you've hidden. Makes me mad!! They also invite contacts you have to be your friend, which maddens me even more!! :-|

Island Report 18 Feb 2016 11:10

It isn't the fault of Facebook, or any other social media site, when people give away so much information about themselves - often without realising.
I've been surprised by what members, perhaps unwittingly, give away about themselves right here on GR.

Facebook is fun and fine. Just be sensible and take responsibility for yourself.
-----------------------------------------------------

When I first joined FB date of birth was required. Giving a false birthdate was the obvious thing to do. This can be hidden so no chance of being royal. ;-)

I was reluctant to join FB at first but was coerced into it by Fanny by Gaslight whom some of you may remember from on here. She chose my name for me - my middle name and maiden name translated into Welsh. :-D

My avatar is a my favourite children's cartoon character.

Having lived a fairly public life, I am not too over concerned about what people know or don't know, I just don't wash my dirty linen in public.

I've never regretted being coerced into joining.....but I wouldn't tell the old bat FBG that! ;-) :-D

Well, talking about bringing up children, meeting up and the vagaries of the English language are hardly likely to bring the 'boys in blue' to our doorstep are they?

I'm also aware the government probably has details of which political party I'm a member of, and every on-line petition I've signed, but as I'm against invasion of privacy and don't give a monkey's wotsit about what they think I, quite frankly, don't give a damn.

There's an old saying, 'the eavesdropper never hears any good of themselves'.

FB keep your ip address(es) in their logs so they are perfectly well aware which real names match up to nicknames and other aliases. As that does nothing to stop them selling targetted ads they are not bothered. OTOH they are quite willing to give the sign-on lists inc "secrets" to the boys in blue which has come as a bit of a shock to some.

"You cannot use a nickname or pseudonym with facebook."

Not true. I'm on Facebook, and I use my maiden name.

I didn't give my real date of birth, or exactly where I live. I didn't give names of schools or where I have worked.

I know one person on FB who uses his dog's name!

There are lots of very interesting FB pages.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 17 Feb 2016 23:16

Yup! Yet my nickname is accepted :-S

Actually, I met a 'beau' of my daughter's once. We became 'friends' on FB.
When he first met me, he didn't say 'Hello Maggie', he called me by my nickname.
I was a bit taken aback, as I thought my daughter would have told him my real name.
Even weirder is that my nickname is one my ex used (no, it's not fluffy bum, or oodly woodly), and ex was there. He did a 'double take' when he heard my nickname :-S :-S :-D :-D

(I'm friends with ex on FB - but he rarely uses it.)
