Didn't know things had changed on GR

I'm a bit miffed after finding GR had renewed my subscription automatically.
Obviously I check my emails on a regular basis as its my main email account but I do not remember getting any mail from GR saying that they had 1) changed the way they ask if you want to continue and 2) I know for a fact I never agreed to them keeping my card details as I have been victim to credit card fraud in the past and I never ever agree to anyone keeping my card details.
Obviously I I went straight to "my account" section and found a totally different page to what I remember and I have changed all "automatic" settings, I am really cross because like many I am on a budget and cannot afford shocks like this, I will honour this years agreement and I will be keeping an closer eye on GR but once it's up that will be the end

You need to email support and tell them. They might help but not if you post on the boards or contact other members as they would argue that you have used your membership sub.

It's a shame that one of 33 odd silent viewers couldn't suggest this.

I didn't think it had changed in the past year, they do normally send out a reminder. Maybe somebody who has renewed recently can tell us.

I would assume if you didn't see that they renewed it this time, that you didn't see that they renewed it last time either, as the 'auto renew' has been going for several years so you might want to check back. I hope you were on just the standard sub rather than platinum or whatever it is now, as that is a lot of money to lose :-0

As regards emails from GR half the time they go to Spam, so if you don't check that on a regular basis you may have missed it.

Possibly the 33 odd silent viewers hadn'f renewed so weren't able to post.

Anyone who has auto renewed by mistake needs to contact GR and not post as using the message board makes a refund unlikely.

My renewal is due in April..
I have cancelled my auto renewal, even though it´s only for basic membership because I get more input from a free site.
Recently, Genes has become virtually stagnant as far as input from members is concerned.

I renewed at the beginning of February and had the usual email about two weeks in advance telling me how much it would be.

The problem is that the Auto Renew On is the default position ................ you have to go into your account and change it to Auto Renew Off.

BUT you then also have to check regularly, and most especially in the few weeks before your subscription is due, as it has been known for it to revert back to Auto Renew On.

I did not get an email from GR last September when my sub was due, even though I had made sure that Auto Renew was off and I had kept checking.

I had to email them to ask whether I was going to be able to renew and how much they were asking for :-(

Their reply told me to check my spam folder as GR emails often end up in there ............ nope, it hadn't, and it would have been the first time if a GR email had gne there anyway!

Re keeping credit card details ..................

once you give your credit card details to any company, they can keep those details on file, especially when it is a subscription service.

GR has always done that

I received an email approx 2 weeks before my sub was due to expire. It included what the renewal price was going to be.

I renewed in February, and received an email prior to the renewal date :-)

I also received an email 2 or 3 weeks before my renewal date. As I had auto renew switched on it just reminded me they would be taking x amount on such and such a date.

Also during those few weeks there was a renew button at the top of the page printed in blue, I think where the upgrade button usually is.

Several complaints on anothr site re money being taken despite auto-renwal being unticked by FMP & My Heritage and an explanation suggested is that {as Sylviain Canada posted} the ticked position is the default and everytime there is an update it returns to the default therefore we need to keep checking :-)

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Mar 2016 20:07

ElizabethK ...........

the return to the default position is nothing new!

I've noticed that I've had to keep checking for about the last 8 or 9 years, although I've often been pooh poohed by some on here!

EDIT:- Just checked, and it's still showing Auto Renew Off :-D

but then I don't think there have been many updates to the system recently

I just had a reminder for 17th March. I first joined in Feb 2005 but last year there was a mix up with them trying to take money from an old card in error so finally paid on 17th March.

Low amount again so I am happy to leave details with them to automatically renew at a cheaper price.

Hi ladies and gents, I'm not going to ask for a refund as I put in my post I will honour this years subscription as for retaining my card details I specifically requested they not be kept by GR and I also know that I'd not got the default setting switched on as I got an email telling me my subscription was due for renewal last year
All important emails are filtered to a folder I have labled "Important" for the very reason of not wanting to miss something I should be awear of.

Thank you for your replies and suggestions you've been most helpful

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 25 Mar 2016 03:07

Polly .............

Do please make sure that the default setting is set at OFF before it gets close to subscription time next year. As several of us posted, it does indeed switch to the default ON all by its own little self.

The fact that you got an email last year but not this year does indeed indicate that it had switched to ON

You DO have to keep checking throughout the year.

A few years ago, GR renewed my subscription (the Auto had changed by magic :-S ), so I check that every few months, especially when it's getting close to renewal time.

The weird thing is......... they renewed using a credit card that had been cancelled.

Yes, I contacted them........ and renewed a week or so after my expiry date.
